Что стоишь, качаясь
Тонкая рябина
Головой склоняясь
До самого тына
 
А через дорогу
За рекой широкой
Так же одиноко
Дуб стоит высокий
 
Как бы мне, рябине
К дубу перебраться
Я б тогда не стала
Гнуться да качаться
 
Тонкими ветвями
Я б к нему прижалась
И с его листами
День и ночь шепталась
 
Но нельзя рябине
К дубу перебраться
Знать, судьба такая
Век одной качаться

Why do you stand swaying,
Thin wild ash tree, so tense,
Bowing your head down
To the very lath fence?
 
And across the roadway,
Locked in wide stream haven,
Oak tree, just as lonely,
Stands as tall as heaven.
 
How would I, the wild ash,
Get across to that oak?
After making wild dash
I would stop my sway stroke.
 
With my thin green branches
I would snuggle up him
And would whisper nightly
With his intertwined leaves.
 
But the wild ash cannot
Get across to oak tree,
It's her cruel fate to
Sway forever lonely.
