Pythia [ Pythia (Πυθία) ]

Pythia

You knew her, that enchantress, that dolly Pythia¹
who made the double-edged jokes
In the mornings she was bored to go to work;
another one back to back, here’s to her well-being
Collecting pension stamps, my Apollo is loathsome
yet she performed her chants every holiday
and she had a secret affair with the Unutterable Holy one
and that lad from the pub

Whoa! She was an enchantress, she really was
Whoa! And that showed in every pursuit of hers
Whoa! Heathen! Whoa! Haywire!
Oh ya! Betrayed by her gods
Whoa! Heathen! Whoa! Haywire!
Oh ya! Betrayed by her gods

Whenever she took her foam bath Castalia² was buzzing
all the lowlifes were peeping
She wore huge bangles, small crosses on her ears
she chewed on a wisp of hair that fell before her
Many people sought her advice, and was listening to her in awe
even the handsome soldier
I too sought her advice to see what will become of me
and she told me not to scratch old wounds

Whoa! She was an enchantress, she really was
Whoa! And that showed in every pursuit of hers
Whoa! Heathen! Whoa! Haywire!
Oh ya! Betrayed by her gods
Whoa! Heathen! Whoa! Haywire!
Oh ya! Betrayed by her gods

¹ Pythia A famous oracle, not a specific woman, but the high priestess at the temple of Apollo. Here used as a metaphor since Pythia was well known for he equivocal prophesies
² Castalia A nymph transformed by Apollo to a fountain which inspired poets. Also a province in Herman Hesse's masterpiece The Glass Bead Game. Here used as a metaphor.

Thank you so much evfokas! This is a fine song, Machairitsas' way of singing it reflects well the atmosphere, but now I know the details too. Thank you!

You're welcome. I've added some comments in case you didn't know who Pythia was
