amare est carmen ignotum

anglais

My song is Love Unknown

My song is love unknown,
My Savior’s love to me;
Love to the loveless shown,
That they might lovely be.
O who am I, that for my sake
My Lord should take, frail flesh and die?

He came from His blest throne
Salvation to bestow;
But men made strange, and none
The longed for Christ would know:
But O my Friend, my Friend indeed,
Who at my need His life did spend.

Here might I stay and sing,
No story so divine;
Never was love, dear King!
Never was grief like Thine.
This is my Friend, in Whose sweet praise
I all my days could gladly spend.

Commentaires pour la demande:

THe original author of this song is Samuel Crossman, 1664. It is usually played to the music of John Ireland - 'love uknown'.
I have been working on translating this myself from English to Italian, but would like to see if this translation service would also help - some words are very difficult and I am not sure of a good substitue - such as loveless -or the best way to say the phrase 'my song is love unknown' and have the meaning stay the same.
I hope to get this translated into Latin as well. Thank you for any help! I hope that that song can be sung in Italian and keep the same lovely melody.

amare est carmen ignotum

amare est carmen ignotum,
Salutari meo amorem ad me;
amor ad sine amore iacerem ostenditur,
ut applicarent esse amabilia.
oh quis ego sum, quod mei causa
Dómino meo debet accipere, carnem fragiles et moriuntur?

Ille est egressus ex benedíxit solium
Salutáre congregam;
sed homines facti alienos, et nemo
desiderantissimi Christum voluissent cognósceret:
sed oh mihi Amicus, mihi Amicus quidem,
Qui apud suae vitae meae opus expendere.

hic cui volo etiam tardavere et cantare,
nulla ita Divino fabulam;
numquam fuit amare, Rex carum!
numquam dolor fuerit similis Tui.
hoc amicus meum est, in cujus dulcis laudem
Ego omnibus diebus meis potuit libentissime impendam.

The first line of your translation translates back as "to love is an unknown song" - that's rather different from the original text.

The second means "by my saving one the love to me" - that also doesn't make much sense.
The rest I haven't checked yet.
Are you sure that you are a native speaker of latin?

Nobilis Lupo     mai 15th, 2013

I'm sorry, well if you're so good at it, why didn't you do it in the first place??

Sciera     mai 15th, 2013

I'm not good at translating into latin, I can only the other way 'round. Also, I hadn't seen the request before.

Sciera     mai 15th, 2013

Well, if you wanna see my version, I'd begin with
"carmen meum est amor ignotus
(est) amor slavatori mei ad me
(est) amor praebitus ad vacuos ab amore
Ut ei sint amandi"
Propably it's full of mistakes but I still consider it better than your version.

I translated it according to the way we were taught in school.. I don't care what you consider better 'cause my head isn't that big.. I just help out where I can... Okay?

Thank you for your effort, it's nice to see people upholding our tradition. There is no need to get upset but your translation is wrong. Not that I would have done better myself and this is why I won't rate it. You may want to revisit it in the future.
Thank you

thanks, I know mine is not perfect, I'm not a Roman but it wasn't neccesary for them jumping down my throat about it..

Sciera     mai 30th, 2013

I don't see anything wrong in directly telling you your mistakes since this is an awful translation.
You are welcome to help, but this doesn't help anyone, especially since it seems to have been a request.

Nobilis Lupo     juin 3rd, 2013

I don't mind someone telling me I'm wrong, it's just the way you do it that I don't like..

Sciera     juin 3rd, 2013

I tried to show you what you did wrong, and that there is a lot that you did wrong. What about that do you not like? I only said the truth.

Instead I could also have started insulting you, which I didn't, so I don't get what kind of problem you have with my comments.

Nobilis Lupo     juin 11th, 2013

the way you interpreted your third comment is what I find insulting..

Sciera     juin 11th, 2013

I only wrote that I'm not good at translating into Latin but that this translation of yours is so awful that I think that even I can do it better. That's no insult but a fact: Roughly every other word of your translation contains mistakes.
Let me show you this for the first line:
"My song is love unknown," -> amare est carmen ignotum,"
"amare" is a verb. "love" is used as a noun in the English text, so it must be translated to a noun, which would be "amor".
Also, the subject of the sentence is "my song". You omitted the "my", that would be "carmen meum". But you connected "carmen" with "unknown" ("ignotum") which isn't connected with it in the english text.
The "unknown" must be connected with "amor", and so it must be "ignotus", since "amor" is a masculine noun.
