Ai, ai, și-am zis verde...
Și-am zis verde lemn uscat,
Măicuța m-a măritat
După un băiat bogat,
Ăl mai urât om din sat, măi.

Ai, și-am zis verde mărăcine,
Și când îl vedeam că vine
Se strângea inima-n mine,
M-apucau frigurile
Și toate damblalele.

Măi, când venea dracu-l știa
Cum îți în brațe ședea
Camașa când i-o spălam,
Pe garduri i-o atârnam
Și în picioare-o netezeam,
Și-ntr-un cântec mi-l țineam, măi:

Păi, bărbate, bărbate, arză-te-ar focul,
Banii tăi mi-au luat norocul,
Tu mi-ai mâncat și viața,
Și mi-ai ofilit fața

C-ai zis că, de ești bogat,
Nevastă ți-ai cumpărat,
Ei, dar funie de-ți cumpărai,
Mai bine, zău, că făceai!

Și să te fi spânzurat, mă,
De tine să fi scăpat
Și să-mi fi luat eu bărbat,
Unul frumos și sărac,
Și să fi trăit cu drag, măi!

Ai, și când îl vedeam că vine,
Să crească inima-n mine,
Să-i spăl cămașa cu rouă,
Să-mi fie dragostea nouă,
S-o usuc pe trandafiri,
La umbră de rozmarini,
Printre gene s-o cârpesc
Cu sulfină s-o-nvălesc,
Pe obraz s-o netezesc, măi.

Și să credeți, oameni buni,
Că ce vă spun nu-s minciuni,
Eu întruna i-am cântat
De cu zori pân' la-nserat,
Până când s-a spânzurat, măi.

Lament

Oh, and I said green…
And I said green dry timber,
My mother married me off
To a wealthy boy
The ugliest one in the village

Oh and I said green bramble,
When I’d watch him come home,
My guts would churn
I’d get shivers
And jitters

And when he’d come come devil knows what he’d get up to
He’d lie around with the cat on his lap
When I’d wash his shirt
I’d hang it on the fence
And smooth it out with my feet
And I’d keep singing to him:

Well man, my man, may you burn in hell,
Your money has taken away my good fortune
You have wasted my life
And wrinkled my face

You thought to yourself that since you’re rich,
You’d buy yourself a wife,
Oh, if you had bought a rope instead
You would have been better off!

You could have hanged yourself
So that I’d be rid of you
I could have married a man
A poor, handsome one
And lived happily!

And as I’d watch him come home,
My heart would race,
I’d wash his shirt with dew drops,
To keep our love fresh,

I’d dry it on roses,
In the shade of rosemary
I’d patch it up so carefully
I’d wrap it up in sweet clover
I’d smooth it out with my cheek.

Oh, and believe me, good people,
The things I tell you aren’t lies
Because I constantly sang to him
From dusk til dawn
Until he hanged himself.
