whatever god wants

Fanny Lu
Gente de Zona

[Fanny Lu]
I'm going to fall in love today, no matter if it hurts me,
we'll make the whole night crazy.
Let what's going to happen happen,
let it be whatever God wants.
If love goes with hurt, then let it hurt us.

[Gente de Zona]
I'm going to fall in love today, no matter if it hurts me,
we'll make the whole night crazy.
Let what's going to happen happen,
let it be whatever God wants.
If love goes with hurt, then let it hurt us.

[Fanny Lu]
The only thing that matters to me is what my heart tells me,
nothing will prevent me (me, me, me) from
making you mine in bed, waking up in the morning
dreaming on your chest.

[Gente de Zona]
Come on, I'm going to give you all that pleases you,
let me, I'm going to make love to you time and again.
I want to make you mine, all my life,
all my life, all my life.

[Gente de Zona]
I'm going to fall in love today, no matter if it hurts me,
you and me, we'll make the whole night crazy.
Let what's going to happen happen,
let it be whatever God wants.
If love comes with hurt, then let it hurt us.

[Fanny Lu]
If I whisper a secret in your ear
and afterwards I plant a kiss on your mouth,
you go crazy, I go crazy,
you look at me, I look at you,
and I go crazy when you touch me,
oh, you rouse me!

If you say "whatever", would it make much difference in English?

It does make a difference, but not really a big one, and "whatever" could be used instead of "what" in the body of the song and hence in the title, as long as the word in the 4th line of the 1st stanza and the word in the title are kept the same as each other.

Logically, "whatever" and "what" are the same except when you start looking for connotations that probably are not really there to any great extent except that "whatever" makes it clear that what it is isn't yet determined and no particular thing is desired while "what" leaves whether it is determined yet or whether a particular outcome is desired open. However it's a good idea to be careful when referring to god's will - I've heard extremist Calvinists object to "whatever God wants" on the grounds that everything is predestined because God already knows it, and to suggest that his omniscience doesn't apply to his own future wishes is unacceptable. Personally I think that is a very silly position to take, but "using 'what' keeps the syllable count down" or "because the verse will overflow its line if 'whatever' is used instead" are good reasons for using "what" sometimes, although of course sometims "whatever" may be used to get the syllable count or the stress pattern right.

I also know some people who are very careful about logic who claim that "whatever" in the third line wouldn't make sense with it's ordinary meaning, but they also accept that standard English usage permits it so so in that context "whatever" means "what" (after all, words' meanings often depend on context). And there's a very well known song with the line "Que será, será, whatever will be will be" and "what" wouldn't fit the tune.

I just say it because, to me, "what God wants" is a fact, and here we are dealing with a subjubctive clause, "whatever He may want".

OK, I can understand that. I guess using "whatever" would be closer to the Spanish if that's what the subjunctive means there, so I'll change it. Thanks, Rosa.
