There also exists an alternate version of the song with 'Se raspukala Sar Planina' as the title, with more or less the same lyrics apart from that change. Confusingly, another folk song by that name has no relation to this song. This is the Macedonian version of this folk song. Since Sar Mountain sits on the borders of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, I'm in no doubt there is a Serbian version of this song.

- In the first stanza, 'she' refers to the mountain, the noun takes on a female gender in Macedonian, but in this poetic context a personification makes sense.

- 'čobana' is a more Serbian word for shepherds, in contrast to 'ovčara' used in the same line, but serves to highlight the situation of Sar mountain on the border of the two countries.

- 6 weeks after someone's death is an important milestone for mourning in the Christian Orthodox faith. The song implies that a wife pays her dues honourably enough in mourning, but that in the end, a mother's grief is the hardest to bear and longest lasting.

- I was torn for whether to include translations for 'ajde' and 'aj' as the text could stand without them, but in the context they imply the shepherds are entreating the mountain for mercy and really add something to the mood.

"Шар Планина" - thank you for this beautiful translation, it's very clear to me from my own side. But I don't understand "Густа ми магла паднала" at all. Can you try to translate and explain that Serbian side to the same tunes, too?
