What Must Be Said

Versions : #1#2#3#4#5
Why am I silent, why have I kept silent for too long,
on what is self-evident, the object of simulation and
planning, in which we, the survivors,
we are but footnotes on a page.
One asserts the right to a first strike,
capable of eradicating the Iranian people,
bound in their coerced joy under the yolk
of one who is full of talk,
under the pretext that one suspects him, in his zone of influence,
of building a nuclear bomb.
But why do I forbid myself
from naming this other country
who for years – in secrecy –
disposes of a growing nuclear potential
subjected to no control, since no inspection is ever
is permitted?
The general silence around this fact,
the silence to which I myself have subscribed,
I feel as a burdensome lie,
a constraint that imposes a heavy sanction,
in the case of trangression:
the verdict of antisemitism is quite current
But today, although my country
is guilty of crimes
that know no measure,
for which it must answer time and time again,
my country, in a purely commercial gesture,
A few with nimble lips talk of reparations,
will deliver yet another submarine to Israel
one whose specialty lies in its warheads
capable of destroying all life
in a land where the existence
of a single nuclear bomb has not been proven,
but where suspicion serves the means of proof
I say what must be said.
But why have I kept silent for so long?
Because I believed my origins,
stained by crimes that will forever remain unpardonable
forbade me from expressing this truth
from reproaching this fact of Israel,
a country of whom I am and wish to remain a friend.
Why do I say it only now
that I am old, with what ink remains
that Israel's nuclear power
endangers a world peace already fragile?
Because it must now be said,
what may well be too late to say tomorrow;
and because we, Germans, with the weight of our past,
could become accomplices to a crime
foreseeable and hence impossible
to justify with the usual justifications.
And to add that I will no longer keep silent
because I have had enough of the West's hypocrisy
and I hope that many will be those who will join me
in breaking the chains of silence
to call upon the author of an evident menace
to renounce violence, as well as demand
a permanent and unhindered inspection
of Israel's nuclear potential
and of Iranian nuclear installations
By an international authority
accepted by both governments
It is only then that we could help
Israelis and Palestinians alike,
and all people, who
in enmity live side by side
in this region occupied by illusions
and so thus help ourselves.

Was gesagt werden muss

Warum schweige ich, verschweige zu lange,
was offensichtlich ist und in Planspielen
geübt wurde, an deren Ende als Überlebende
wir allenfalls Fußnoten sind.
