Two small notices/suggestion offers:
1. Outland: what's about "foreignness"? ξενιτιά's meaning includes more the situation/(bad) feelings of a 'man in a strange land' (or 'foreigner') than the land itself...
2. Instead of "next door" I think something with "neighbor" sounds better 
Thank you for your interest and kind word. Foreignness would be something having the quality of foreign and doesn't capture the meaning, I changed it back to my first choice "alien lands" instead of outland but it gives an extraterrestrial note I wanted to avoid
Next door doesn't only mean literally next door but also near by, I believe the "girl next door" isn't confused with "next door girl" and inasmuch as english don't have inflected nouns it sounds better to say the girl next door than the neighbouring girl; if you say just neighbour then this could mean anything even your badass 200lbs kickboxer one
I'm open to suggestions on how can one say ξενιτιά in english. Probably there is a word but an old one used when many english speaking folks underwent the experience
