Embraces Me

He1 wasn't even a child yet;
Before the sins,
That's when he started to croon Her.2

Only buds were growing
In the place of limbs;
He didn't even know who „I” was.3
But said...

"She's eternally mine,
Yet I'm always expecting Her;
Not reality,
Nor a dream though
As She embraces me.
Doesn't accuse with anything,
Just embraces me..."

Time has triumphed,
And after life,
A plane4 collapsed out of its limbs...5

His heart turned into
A crumpled rag-ball,
But one thing he hasn't forgotten:
He sang that...

"She's eternally mine,
Yet I'm always expecting Her;
Not reality,
Nor a dream though
As She embraces me.
Doesn't accuse with anything,
Just embraces me.
Just embraces me,
Just embraces me,
Just embraces..."

  • 1. Hungarian personal pronouns have no gender, so it could be "she" as well.
  • 2. Same case as above, though here it's a bigger deal, so to say. In my reading the song's either about the eternal and unconditional love of God, or the ideal of the perfect love of human complementarity encoded into the soul, longed for throughout life unti its fulfillment. An argument for the former is that Ákos is a very spiritual person with many of his songs being related to the Almighty; and one for the latter is that the Lord's embrace would most likely be considered VERY real according to him. So I went with the latter and used "She", the capitalization expressing the ideality.
  • 3. Referring to the subject's concept of his own self.
  • 4. The tree.
  • 5. Ie. that's what he's become, so "collapsed" is a past participle here, not a past tense verb.
