The Codfish (El Bacalao)

Angol translation

The Codfish

Look at how I like
How I like codfish, look
Codfish with potatoes
But look how I like it
How I like codfish, look
Codfish with potatoes

Codfish is a fish that lives in deep waters
Codfish is a fish that lives in deep waters
If you want to catch it, use a a very strong rod
The codfish wiggles in a very hard manner

Look at how I like
Look at how I like codfish, look
Codfish with potatoes
But look how I like it
How I like codfish, look
Codfish with potatoes

Codfish is cooked in different ways
Codfish is cooked in different ways
Some put cumin and others put cinnamon
Even a little bit of sugar and a sprig of mint
But what I like is your special seasoning
But codfish like yours, I haven't tasted another like it
But what I like is your special seasoning
Well, codfish like yours, I haven't tasted another like it

Look at how I like
Look at how I like codfish, look
Codfish with potatoes
But look how I like it
How I like codfish, look
Codfish with potatoes

Some eat it at night
Others eat it during the day
Some at noon time
It's a special treat
But you can give it to me now
Because I can't wait
Well, codfish like yours, I haven't tasted another like it
But you can give it to me now
Because I can't wait
Well, codfish like yours, I haven't tasted another like it

Look at how I like it
Look at how I like codfish, look
Codfish with potatoes
But look how I like it
How I like codfish, look
Codfish with potatoes

Look at how I like it
How I like codfish, look
Codfish with potatoes
Look at how I like it
How I like codfish, look
Codfish with potatoes

Thank you Freda for your translation Smile .

I wanted to add my version, but... I'm afraid it won't be possible, because you have here a play on words and it's impossible to express it the same way in any other language than Spanish.

"El bacalao con papas" has also a completely different meaning Wink .

Maybe you should comment it?

Hola Andres,
Yes, this song has a lot of double entendres in it so I just translated it "as is" & left it to the reader's imagination. "El bacalao con papas" has a completely different meaning?? I guess I totally missed that.

I don't know...do I even dare ask what that meaning is?? Smile

The word “papas” in some Latin American countries is used colloquially to refer to “magnificent forms of breast and buttocks” and the phrase “tu bacalao con papas” can mean a slender body of girl with a curvy shape. This way some parts of this song get a second, more playful, sense.

This video perfectly shows this second meaning (for those who are able to understand it). BTW, I like it very much because it shows Habana Vieja and watching it I recall the places that 4 years ago I was able to see myself.

OK, thanks for the explanation, I guess I'd never heard that one out here in the Southwest. I sometimes hear people say the slang papas meaning something is OK or going well.
I like the video & Habana Vieja is beautiful, lucky you that you got to see it for yourself.

I took a lot of pictures - almost 3,000, but I traveled through the most of the country - also of the places that you can see on the video and of course of the vintage American cars from the fifties.

In fact if you take a closer look at the buildings you'll see that they are mostly in disastrous condition. El Capitolio and also some buildings in the city were renovated, but all the buildings were Cubans live - not.
