Elverhøy / The hill of the elves (Elverhøy)

Angol translation

Elverhøy / The hill of the elves

I laid down my head at Elverhøy
and closed my eyes to rest.
Then two maidens came walking up to me
who wished to speak with me.

One of them stroked my white cheek
the other she whispered in my ear
Oh, stand up you fair young man
oh, do you wish to join the dance?

Elverhøy, oh elverhøy, oh, do you wish to join the dance?
Elverhøy, oh elverhøy, oh, do you wish to join the dance?

Stand up fair young man
do you wish to join the dance?
My maidens shall sing you a song,
the most beautiful song you could ever wish to hear.

Elverhøy, oh elverhøy, oh, do you wish to join the dance?
Elverhøy, oh elverhøy, oh, do you wish to join the dance?
At that (the sound of the song)the stream stopped running
which had earlier run its usual course.

Elverhøy, oh elverhøy, oh, do you wish to join the dance?
Elverhøy, oh elverhøy, oh, do you wish to join the dance?

Concerning the title:
Elverhøy is derived from: the hill of the elves. Previously it was believed that low green hills were often occupied by elves and that they were places where you could run into creatures from the underworld, especially if you were foolish enough to go to sleep on these places.

Elverhøy

Jeg lagde mit hoved ved Elverhøy
mine øyne finge en dvale
så kom der to Jomfrugu gangandes fram
der vilde så gjerne med sig tale.

Den eine støyk meg ved hviden kind
den andre ho hviskra meg i øyra
å statt up du fagreste ungersvend
