On the way

I close the door
Streets seem to be crying
Clouds seem to be fleeing
I step on the bus
People seem to watch me
But I want to avoid them
Before they see me

The days are gone and forgotten
When you didn’t forget my birthday
You unconditionally chose me

I see the fields
Passing me by, houses
It’s quiet behind the windows
Who can see me
in blue-lit trains
Your heart is so close to me
But it doesn’t beat

And these days are lost and forgotten
Your black hair and your smile
That you were everything for me
It’s still so deep inside of me
That I could share everything you had
You ran your fingers through my hair and said :

You don’t know my voice
What you see now is who I am
Do you want to dance with illusions?
In your thoughts
Are you further than the present?
Do you want to go back to the past?
Do you recognize this?

And these days are lost and forgotten
Red wine on a terrace
that you were everything for me
It’s still so deep inside of me
But I forgot when you saw me
that I’m so different from you

I run into the street
but it will never cheer me up
because it can’t embrace me
Who should see me
I would like to shout it out
I would like to shout endlessly
But I just can’t

You’re not only mine*
I can show the whole world
That maybe it’s better this way

These days are lost and forgotten
And I forgot when you saw me
that I’m so different from you

I don't think he says "niet". I think he does say "nu". "You're now only mine." The meaning is that he's alone with her and she's not really there. It's the same as when he says that her heart is so close to him, but it doesn't beat (which is also a play on words because it can mean it isn't true).

And, no offense, he definitely doesn't say "toen". "Dat ik vergat hoe jij me zag" means: "that I forgot how you saw me" or "how you thought of me". She'd always said that he was very different from her, but he hadn't attached much importance to that.
