and has been in many places and parts in the South and in the North,
I never saw any non-Gaelic woman who could match up to you,
you woman with fair locks who was brought up in high-quality Uist3.
I'd better stop this song before you all become tired of it,
and I hope you4 understand my worries when I'm so far from land right now,
but the thing that I'll say for ever is that I myself admit
that it was on the north side of Loch a' Chàrnain that the girl I love5 was raised.

- 1. most people sing "thug thu dhomh fuath" which is clear and simple rather than "bheir thu bhuam fuath" (as here) which I think is a bizarre way of saying the same thing
- 2. literally: "with your eye"

- 4. this is a plural you, not the singular you he addresses the girl with
- 5. literally:"the girl of my heart"

There are a lot of different versions of this song on vyinl or tape or CD out there; none of them is the original (which didn't repeat the first verse after the last, had an extra verse which isn't in this version and came immediately before the last verse, and differed from any of the extant recordings in a few places) and in fact I've never heard the original sung although I've seen it in print. I've posted this version as it's the video nearest to the original; but the Calum Kennedy recording (which has only 4 verses, one of which is sung twice to make 5) is by far the best known version (and I think it was the first commercial record of the song - this version is much much more modern).
