Siam Street

With his English sailor's eyes
and his waxed overcoat from the rue de Siam1
he strolled around the town
oh so sure to impress passers by.
My room overlooks the quay
I ws forced, OK, OK,
I didn't unerstand all that he said
the jukebox was playing too loud.

I just understood "how pretty you are
I'm not blarneying you, it's life-long",
I just understood "how pretty you are
I'm not blarneying you, it's life-long".

The moon shone at my window2
and all week my heart danced
the loveliest of waltzes.
My staircase went up to heaven
when he was there in my room,
a little love is what one needs
when there's nothing else in the world.

But there are all these fucking ships
rocking in the harbours
and as the girls appear to say
"There's someone there, come on on board"
they promise them nothing but sunny times
and immoderate love
and leave, in the morning,
just out two eyes to cry with.

To have so much sorrow, you've no idea,
another sailor will make me forget him.
To have so much sorrow, you've no idea,
another sailor will make me forg -

But there are all these fucking ships
which keep on winding me up
and in the course of things seem to say
when the wind makes them pitch and toss

You've not finished, finished sailing...

  • 1. rue de Siam used to be (maybe still is?) a posh shopping street in Brest, so it seems unlikely that the ciré was a simpke oikskin - hence waxed overcoat
  • 2. carreau is singluar, so i'ts not a tiled wall but a window
