Ziu Lillicu

I fanciulli sempre a scuolla non li vollio mai vedere qui a marrar:
Unu dottori, unu scientziau e cuss’atru chi s’abarrat crocau.

Oh yeah!

Traballendi me in sa bingia cun Ballicu, Fisineddu e Srabaroi
cuatrus oras surendi me in su soli po si spratzi unu cocoi.
Li ho risposto: Cittidì chi no ti pigu a puntad’e peis a cu’!

Gei ddu nanta de a mengianu e de a merì:

Nosus pòburus in sa vida traballaus e no naraus mancu “bah”.
Nc’est chi’ arriit in custa terra, nc’est chi’ prangit a diluviu donnia dì.

Oh yeah!

Traballendi me in sa bingia cun Ballicu, Fisineddu e Srabaroi
cuatrus oras surendi me in su soli po si spratzi unu cocoi.

Uncle Lillicu

Four kilos of pears, a crate of eggplant at the marketplace,
one kilogram of green beans, five kilos of rotten peach.
Drink wine like crazy, eat cheese without bread in the morning:
It’s the “gallant’s life”, without pocket money, without too much humanity.

In the morning, with my donkey, with a cap on my head, going to work:
A rat, a loaf of bread, a liter of wine is what I have to eat.
The children always at school, I don’t want to see them hoeing here:
A doctor, a scientist and another guy who stays lying down.

Picking up artichokes standing with my back under the sun, would you believe?
ten calluses in my feet, a leg like a sheep…
You say well, doctor: “Well, take care of yourself, don’t you know? You might die!”
I keep on working your vineyard and you, in the meanwhile, come and bury me.

Life is beautiful, sure, but only if you can eat,
so used to say my mother when I was a child! Oh yeah!

Working in the vineyard with Ballicu, Fisineddu and Srabaroi,1
four hours sweating under the sun to share a loaf of bread.
“I’ve already told you: come away from that vineyard, it is no longer worthwhile for you!”
I replied: “Shut up, or I’ll kick your butt!”

Just look, the brazen face of those who have a lot of money:
“Freedom is all we need, for all of us there’s no more prison!”
“We stand united in the fight!” Yeah, they say so morning and evening:
May the devil take them away and may the earth not see them ever again!

So we are in this world waiting for the time of death to say “ah!”
We, the poor, in our life just work and don’t even say “bah”.
Someone laughs on this earth, someone cries a flood of tears every day.
That’s why we are waiting for Jesus Christ, just to see him.

Life is beautiful, sure, but only if you can eat,
so used to say my mother when I was a child! Oh yeah!

Working in the vineyard with Ballicu, Fisineddu and Srabaroi,
four hours sweating under the sun to share a loaf of bread.
“I already told you, come away from that vineyard, it is no longer worthwhile for you!”
I replied: “Shut up, or I’ll kick your butt!”
