Street corner

I remember a street corner
that's not there any more.
My childhood took place there,
I remember that.

There was a hedge1
a thicket full of hiding places.
The hooligans2 of my district
used to come there to fight.

Now, there's a café,
an impressive bar,
a florist who sells her flowers to lovers
and even for burials.

I remember a street corner
that's not there any more;
I remember a sad evening
when the my heart despaired.

I wept while waiting
for a 15 year old love,
a love that was lost
right at that street corner.

And afterwards I travelled a lot,
too often in foreign lands;
new worlds, constructions and demolitions,
you give me ideas3.

I think I see my street corner,
and suddenly things have reappeared,
I find my hedge again,
my friends, my mistakes4,

my ha'porth of spring lilly 5,
when I was fifteen, when I was twenty6;
everything that was and is no more,
all my old street corner.

La, la, la ...
all my old street corner.

  • 1. the word usully meand palissade, a fence of stakes, a picket fence but it can also (rarely, I think) mean a hedge (of trees rather than of small bushes) and the following line strongly suggest that meaning
  • 2. I don't think there's a precise equivalent of "voyou" in English; it can mean any of an ill-behaved teenager, an impolite and unclean street-urchin, a person with neither scruples nor morals, or anyone with doubtful provenance or manners or ethics; I picked "hooligan" as a word that's about as close as I can get in English.
  • 3. lit: visions
  • 4. literally: slides/slips
  • 5. cheap perfume
  • 6. lit: my fifteen years, my 20 years
