I could need a bit help transcribing and understanding one Sanskrit sentence.
It's repeated several times at the end of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_HeWCY40k8 (beginning at 4:05)

I found out by chance that it's very similiar to the first line of this: http://lyricstranslate.com/en/atmasfera-samsaramangala-arati-lyrics.html
But the second word sounds different, rather like "divāe" instead of "dāvānala".
So, can someone who understands Sanskrit please tell me whether they sing "saḿsāra-divāe-līḍha-loka" ("संसार-दिवाए-लीढ-लोक") or something else, and please translate it?

Also, I have another question. Is this album here sung in Sanskrit or in another language?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulY1FwLxI8o
I read that the titles are Sanskrit and the lyrics are part Hindi, part Czech but I don't know.
And does it make any sense to make transcription requests for it?

Hi Sciera,

There's no "divāe" in Sanskrit, it's probably "devāy" or "devān" either of which would roughly translate the sentence into something along the lines of "The universal God drank the cosmos".

As for the album... the titles are in Hindi, not Sanskrit (the script, originally used for Sanskrit, is used for quite a few indian languages, among which the best known is Hindi). I can't make out even a single word in the songs, so I can't help you there, and as such I don't think anyone will be able to transcribe it. Here's a translation of the titles:

1. संहार रक्त काली - Destruction, Blood, Kāli (Kāli is a Goddess - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kali)
2. अस्तित्व की चिता पर - On the Pyre of Reality/Existence
3. शव साधना - Corpse accomplishment (Not sure what they were trying here)
4. काली मां - Mother Kāli (As the Goddess is affectionately called)
5. मृत्यु ही सत्य है - Death is Truth (Or "Only Death is True")
6. मृत्यु का वीभत्स नृत्य - Death's Horrid Dance (Or "Death's Sinful/Abhorrent Dance")
7. खण्ड मण्ड योग - Creed, Juice/Frog, Unity with the One (One here being God, not Neo - this seems like another lost in translation case)
8. दिव्य प्रेम की ज्वाला से दग्ध - Burnt by the Fire of Divine Love

If you do find a transcription of the lyrics, I'll be happy to translate them for you - at least the Hindi part. Czech is Greek to me.

Tschüs! (I'm still learning so please don't reply in German :D)

Hello, and thanks for your help!

I actually didn't expect an answer xD

I've only begun learning a bit of Sanskrit and don't know Hindi at all so I can hardly check myself what these phrases mean. But I already had found translations of some of the song titles here:
http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Cult_of_Fire/%E0%A4%AE%E0%A5%83%E0%... (in the add. notes)
Those are official translations (or so it says there). Some differ a bit from what you translated them as.

For example "When Death Is All" instead of "Death is Truth".
Your translation of that makes sense, though, since "only death is real" is a common phrase in metal music.

Some of the titles are only transliterated, not translated there, though, and not even correctly.

Well, I'll try to get the booklet and check what it says there. If there are lyrics in it I'll probably come back to you.

Btw, I've made a transcription request here: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/cult-fire-sa%E1%B8%BFh%C4%81ra-rakta-k%C4...

About "saḿsāra-devāy-līḍha-loka" - I think that's what it sounds like. I can't be sure but your translation might fit the context.

Hi,

Cool! I had heard that Sanskrit is a popular language to learn in Germany, I thought it was just a rumor, it's nice to know it's true. I don't know much myself, I "accidently" picked it in high school and struggled through it. :)

Sure thing, if you can find the lyrics I'll be more than happy to help.

Ah! the transcription request... I saw it the day I joined the community (about 4 days back) and listened to it, but it's impossible for me to make out what they're saying. Sorry. :~

I thought it might, which is why I assumed it was one of those.

Btw, how do you type with the lines on top, for the Romanized Sanskrit you're typing. I've been copying what you typed. :p

Sanskrit was a popular language to learn here 30 years ago, when there was all the Hare Krishna singers, New Agers, hippies etc. But that was before my time xD
Nowerdays it's rather rare I think. But there still is lots of literature on it to find online and in university libraries.
I even know that there are Sanskrit courses on the university where I study but I think that I'll try learning it by myself first, and I also suppose that those curses are only for the people who study indology.
I'd assume it would be rather easy to learn for you since you know Hindi (as it's easier to learn Latin for someone who knows, for example, Spanish). Since I know, due to my studies, a bit Old Hight German and other old languages, seeing the connections to the Sanskrit words isn't that difficult for me, though, so I guess learning vocabulary won't be as complicated as it would be if it was a language from a different language family.

Btw, there are also some other transcription requests for Sanskrit songs:
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/transrequests/1000138/none/none
If you want to give them a try; they should be easier.
I even added one of these requests myself but they don't really interest me that much, I just thought I should mention them.

About the lines on top: I mostly copied them from a romanized Sanskrit text I found on this website. But you can also find them in the special characters menu of your office program (at least in Libre Office, which I use, it can be found easily).

Ah the hippies! Well I heard that from my German teacher who was probably there over 10 years ago. Probably hung out with them.

High German, sounds interesting!

The thing is even in India there are two "root" languages - Sanskrit and Old Tamil. North Indian languages are largely derived from Sanskrit - Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali, Marwari, Marathi, Orriya. South Indian languages are largely derived from Old Tamil - Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Tulu.
While knowing a language like Hindi does help, I had the misfortune of being taught Sanskrit by a teacher who didn't know Hindi. He taught in Kannada. So there I was trying to learn two languages at the same time. I learnt Kannada but not Sanskrit:~

I'll have a look at them and see if I can do justice to them. I don't want to transcript something if I can't clearly understand what is being said.

So, I now have the booklet :)
I made scans of it:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/4oqum9t6duj0ncu/Booklet_0.png?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/v9sho304b6t52dc/Booklet_1.png?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/sna0ix1rsq5nm80/Booklet_2.png?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/9aypn4hegqor3n0/Booklet_5.png?dl=0

Probably I could type down most the lyrics myself but I think it's better if someone does that who actually understands the language.
Could you please do that? It's mostly easy to read but it's written in a rather calligraphic way. If there are parts you can't decipher due to bad quality of the scan, just tell me. Should be fine, though. If the files are too big I could also upload compressed files.
Now we just need to hope that the text there actually is the complete lyrics ^^

If anyone else wants to help, you are welcome to do so!
_____

Well, if you actually are interested in Old German (Old High German is just one of the two main dialect groups of it; also modern German is mostly derived from the high (=uphill, southern) dialects), we do have a couple of lyrics here written in it. Not many, and often without proper translation, though.
Even in university there normally only are beginner's courses and no one can even understand it fluently. It's not a very difficult language, though, at least if you already know modern German. The main problem with it is the fact that there are lots of subdialects and no coherent orthography which makes looking up words not that easy. And well, there are nearly no text books (as far as I know) that actually teach you the language, only grammar books that aren't written in a good didactic way. I know maybe a handful of actual textbooks but these aren't very good.

That's one of the things that I like about Sanskrit: It's such an old language and still it's still taught as a living language (which it even still is more or less).
Even the western old languages Latin and Ancient Greek are rarely taught like that even though it would make understanding them so much easier.

Sure thing, I'll have a look at this and try my best. I have a couple of Sanskrit dictionaries, so I can always refer to them.

I've really only learnt the basics of German, so I better get a good grasp of the langauage before I immerse myself in Old and High and any other dialects that might be floating around :D

Sanskrit, weirdly is not really spoken anywhere except by literally one village in the country. In most other cases, it is learnt by scholars interested in it historical value, linguists and a few Hindu priests.

We have this saying, at least in the city where I live, that India is a country where the language changes every 100 kms. Any language (other than the not really used Sanskrit) has so many dialects. I can travel about 200 kms north and not understand a single word of the Kannada spoken there.

The files are fine, small files might mean blurry words, rather have a large clear one that takes a bit to download than an unreadable one.

I'll upload a translation of whatever I manage to get it done and send you a link, would you prefer that I post it here or send it via email?

Yes, I did manage to get the transcript right but I'm facing 2 problems;
1) Time, because I've quite a few exams lined up
2) Errors, the transcript contains so many errors, it's going to take time for me to correct those before I can get to translating.

I'm really sorry, I'll try to get at least the first song up within the week and then try putting up at least a song every 2 weeks or so.

If you have exams to take care of, then by all means, first take care of them.
Um, errors in the transcript? Is the booklet too difficult to read, or do the lyrics written in it contain errors?

Hi, thanks for offering to help! It seems the issue with these lyrics is that they were not written by native speakers and therefore contained some mistakes, so it is a larger task than just transcribing them from the booklet.
Hm, seems like I deleted the booklet scans in the meantime, but I can make new ones if you'd take a look.
From what I know, all songs of this album are in Hindi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulY1FwLxI8o
Due to the singing style, it will likely be difficult to transcribe it by listening.

Hi again! I was really busy recently so I didn't even get to start transcribing.

Still busy but too sleepy to focus on stuff for which I need to think, so I sat down this evening and typed in (most) of the first page (or rather the second page, i.e. the right part of the first scan).

There are a lot of parts where I'm not sure whether I got it right and some that I couldn't make out at all (the latter with ...). Most of it is Hindi, so I don't understand a word of those parts.

Also, the order of the parts is not necessarily the correct one as they are widely arranged on the page.

Perhaps you could take a look and correct and perhaps also translate? Thanks a lot! I'd then continue transcribing the next one.

Thanks a lot!

Providing a translation is hardly possible for me as I don't speak any Hindi.
If you as a native speaker can't understand it completely I can only provide vague guesses.

E.g. for "विचित्र ( )अट्टहास..लगा रही हैं"
I think the part in () might be नीणी or perhaps नीपी - but I have no idea whether either of them is a word.

I think next I'll try to transcribe another of the songs that is easier to decipher, and perhaps we can build from there.

Hi

Yes surely.

Hindi and Sanskrit dictionary is huge and moreover ,not everyone reads all religious books of particular deity.
Most of words are taken in song are from various religious books of Goddess Kaali or specific mantra of goddess. So it’s not easy to get specific words unless one go through entire book.

You can PM if you need any help regarding Hindi.
