Great Things

I can still remember,
it was early in the morning
How the moon stood pale in the sky
I slipped softly out the door
I was just a little boy
I would do great things, of that I was sure
I hurried over the meadow a hundred yards to the woods
With bow and arrow in my little hand
And in the thin morning mist the sun was already under way
and had stretched spiderwebs in fine threads over the land
Not far away in a clearing
I had built myself a hut
Out of sticks that lay there on the ground
I felt like an Indian
and spied through the branches
Stuck a couple of huckleberries in my mouth
I was free and on my own, no one to tell me a thing
All that could be heard was a cuckoo, from far away
And so the day passed, until twilight
I felt that the whole place was dear to me,
all the way up to the stars
To do great things, this was my deepest wish
Great things that little boys believe in
To defeat wicked dragons, free a princess
And sock one to the neighbor boy,
how he'd gape
To do great things, this was my deepest wish
Great things that little boys believe in
Sing stupid teachers to sleep and free my friends
And sock one to the neighbor boy,
oh how he'd gape
And I can still remember,
once evening had come
When I got home Grandma was already waiting
She scolded, "How dirty you are,
just look at you, son"
But then there was Kaiserschmarrn1, and plenty
To do great things, this was my deepest wish
Great things that little boys believe in
In the mean time all that has, you might say, become a little more relative
Only the Kaiserschmarrn, I would still love to have some,
now that was a dream
