Warrior

Wounded pride, the game of deception
The great warrior has almost accomplished his goal
To kill the hero, that's the plan
-the plan which was devised in delirium

But invincibility is his obstacle
And only with cunning and the course of time
did he learn of the linen leaf
that landed on the hero's shoulder

The blow of the warrior
is the hero's downfall!
The dragon-killer dies alone...
The warrior's iniquity is the hero's agony!
And yet, the hero shall live on1...

The warrior invited the hero
To a hunt in the forest, just the two of them
He was to have an accident
A stitched cross marked the target2

Thirst forced the hero to kneel
Defenseless, at a spring.
As the warrior then threw his spear
There was no escape!

The hero is ceremonially layed out,
He is escorted in a convoy
The murderer nears, the wound bleeds
Time will be the judge.

  • 1. in the sense of being immortalized through fame
  • 2. literally, a stitched cross marked the sorrow

Ooh, I love the Nibelungen saga!!!!! :)

And yes, you did understand it right, it's a very good and adequate translation, as far as I'm competent to judge this. The only thing that comes to my mind is this line:
'But invincibility is a challenge' Perhaps 'invincibility is THE challenge' would make it a bit clearer. Otherwise, I really like it!! :)

EDIT: Oh, and with our recent forum discussion in mind - 'Und doch wird er unsterblich sein...' in this context, song, perhaps 'shall' could fit well -> 'the hero shall be immortal'?

I think it means that he is / will be immortal because he'll never be forgotten, since he is the hero of this saga. That's how I'd understand it, at least, like 'He will live on forever in our hearts and minds'. Wow, that sounded overstated, right? :D

EDIT: and he wasn't immortal, just physically unharmeable, this spot on his bladebone aside

Shoulder blade, indeed. It's all dict.cc's fault!! :)
