The long roads of the southern United States
Driving across Tennessee
And the dream-come-true comes down on you like rain
Like rain on you and on the road

In a row of cars
Restaurants and hotels
My consciousness stretches
Because once in a while it does me good to get away
My beloved holds the wheel silently

And silence, they say, compliments the wise
I'm sure I've already said too many words
Too many hours on the weary roads
We dropped by to visit Elvis
We bought tickets

The long roads of the western United States
Drive back to myself
And the nightmare-come-true comes down on you like rain

I'm too weak to go and too wise to stay
Or too deaf to hear what they say
And the roads open to a different life
And now is the time for words

To the best show in town
And they're playing on the screen there what I tried to explain
And people are laughing and enjoying themselves
