Carla Bruni - Quelqu'un m'a dit (traduzione in Inglese)

Francese

Tu vois, quelqu'un m'a dit...

Que tu m'aimais encore, me l'a-t-on vraiment dit...
Que tu m'aimais encore, serait-ce possible alors ?

Someone Told Me

I have been told that our lives aren't worth much,

That they're gone in an instant, the way roses fade.

And they say that passing time is just a rascal

It collects our troubles, used to make its clothes

but someone told me...

That you love me again,

Someone has told me that you love me even now.

Could this be true, then? Mmm...

(instrumentals)

They say that destiny makes fun of us

That it promises everything, and gives us nothing

Just when it seems that happiness is within reach,

The eager hand is stretched and still it comes back empty

But someone told me...

That you love me even now,

Someone has told me that you love me again.

Could this be true, then? Mmm...

Could this be true, then?

But who is it that told me you've loved me all this time?

I can no longer say, it was late in the night,

I still hear the voice, but can't make out the face

'He loves you, but it's a secret, don't tell him I told you'

You see, someone told me...

That you still love me, someone really told me...

That you love me even now, could it be true, then?

Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm...Mmm...Mmm

(instrumentals)

I have been told that our lives aren't worth much,

That they're gone in an instant, the way roses fade.

And they say that passing time is just a bastard,

It collects our griefs, makes them into its coats

but someone told me...

That you love me even now,

Someone has told me that you love me even now,

Could it be true, then?

Mmm...Mmm...Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm...Mmm...Mmm...Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm...

Commenti dell’autore:

i took a lot of liberties with this translation, because i wanted the feeling of the original French song to come across. I also used some of my own interpretation to get this feeling, so it may be subject to different views. The most important thing that I was trying to do here was get the lyrics to fit the original music, so that they could be sung.

The English is pleasant to read, but still a few things could have been truer to the original without hurting the aesthetics too much, in my opinion.

makes fun of us -> It means "does not care (at all) about us".

You seem to avoid using "still" for "toujours". That might be an aesthetic choice, but I think that would lighten a few sentences here and there.

et on se retrouve fou -> not much in common with "comes back empty". Also "tendre la main" has more the meaning of "begging" in this context. I would say something like "We reach a begging hand and end up crazed" (the original "fou" does not make that much sense either)

someone really told me -> more like "was I really told that?"
