Lack of Space

Французша

Lack of Space

We're not going to run out of ambition
Height, suspension
Fists raised overhead
We even have some used ones

We're not going to run out of broadcasts
Of sensational scandels
Products in action
We even have some used ones

It isn't the class*, just the lack of space
That threaten us, pushing us into a deadend
It isn't the class, just the lack of space
That threaten us, pushing us into a deadend

We're not going to run out of reflections
In the mirrors of the seasons
Of the sun that goes around in cirlces
We even have some used ones

We're not going to run out of illusions
To travel the world in a hot air balloon
Of jets
We even have some used ones

It isn't the class*, just the lack of space
That threaten us, pushing us into a deadend
It isn't the class, just the lack of space
That threaten us, pushing us into a deadend

We're not going to run out of grass
Of pools in front of houses
Sundays at the uncle's house
We even have some used ones

We're not going to run out of lungs
Of swimming trophies
Of crampon** champions
We even have some used ones

It isn't the class*, just the lack of space
That threaten us, pushing us into a deadend
It isn't the class, just the lack of space
That threaten us, pushing us into a deadend

*with help from some friends (a conversation you can read in the comments section) we figure that the chorus is basically saying "we're not classy because everything we do or have done has already been done a thousand times before." Almost like there's a lack of space in the level of classiness because everything classy worth doing has already been done. It's basically a statement on today's pop culture and the level of classiness it has.

** a crampon is a spiked metal plate you would put on your shoes to go climbing or to help you from slipping in ice or snow

"On en a même d'occasion"
--> I don't know whether it's the same thing in France, but here 'd'occasion' means 'used' like in 'used cars'.

"Those that threaten us, push into a deadend"
--> Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think 'those' should be replaced by 'which'.

"De tours du monde en ballon"
--> Means 'trips around the world in a hot-air-balloon'

Nice translation overall, really Smile

Thank you Big smile

I just have one question. What would the phrase "on en a meme d'occasion" be translated as if you were going to use "used" for "d'occasion"??

crimson_antics     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

'We even sell them for cheap'?...I don't know, I'd have to think about it. Maybe kuroi will see this and have a suggestion. Smile

kuroi_neko     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

we even have some used ones ?

crimson_antics     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

Tiens, quand on parle du loup...Tongue

kuroi_neko     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

meoooow!

crimson_antics     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

And still about this:
"C'est pas la classe, juste le manque de place
Qui nous menace"
--> 'Qui' here means that it's class and the lack of place which threaten them.

kuroi_neko     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

more like "it's not class, only the lack of space that threaten us"
btw. "la classe" is a bit strange here. I must say I'm not sure I understand this chorus.
Usually "c'est la classe" means "that's classy" "we're super cool" or something like that.

sydrhill     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

So does maybe then "c'est pas la classe" translate into "that's not classy"??

kuroi_neko     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

that's what sprung to my mind at first, but I don't really see how that would make sense in this context.

sydrhill     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

It really doesn't make sense but I'm not sure what else "la classe" could translate into...

kuroi_neko     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

Me neither. "la classe" as in social class makes even less sense Smile.

sydrhill     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

Kay I fixed those lines and whether you know it or not...you just taught me a new idiom!! Smile

crimson_antics     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

I'm not sure which idiom you're talking about, but cool either way Laughing out loud

sydrhill     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

"Quand on parle du loup" is french equivalent to the saying "speak of the devil" is it not??

crimson_antics     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

Yeah, you got that right Big smile

kuroi_neko     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

yep, but I'm no more a devil than a wolf. Or so I hope Smile

well after some head scratching, I came up with some possible meaning:
they could be saying "our songs are not full of classy things just because they have been done a thousand times before". i.e. we could do classy things but we're overwhelmed by the mass of the pre-existing same classy things.
If you look at the things in question, they are not as classy as they seem. More like cliché themes for popular songs. It gives the song a kind of tongue in cheek feel.

sydrhill     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

Those are good! At first I was thinking it was a societal statement but I like it better as a pop culture statement.

kuroi_neko     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

Yes, something like that. I watched the video in the mean time and I think that's the intended meaning indeed. Very cute, by the way, like most of the things they do.

sydrhill     қыркүйек 6th, 2012

Haha yeah they do a lot of cute little videos Smile
