One hundred thousand awake guys

Forgetting to miss.
But seriously, who is able to do so?
Head in the clouds
and feet in concrete.
What I need..would be a home
or something like happiness.
For both things there is a place: "Back".

We afford stories
which never continue
because we've been in countries
and everything appeared endless to us.
We don't know the direction.
We afford a life
which is to die for*..
Wretched, "drop-dead"- sad**,
fatally ridiculous.
Where to?

And in one hundred thousand beds
behind one hundred thousand walls
one hundred thousand girls are kissing
one hundred thousand guys awake.
And I wouldn't care about it
if you weren't one of them.
Oh, I wouldn't care...

All the movies, all the songs,
they all are about you.
They tell me that it will come out all right.
They don't explain how this will happen.
And just a second right before I accept it,
just a tiny little part ,
that one word abides and remains: "Back"

We afford stories
that continue
when we reached the limit
when everything appeared endless.
We don't know the direction.
We afford a life
which is to die for...
Wretched, deeply saddened,
fatally ridiculous.
Where to?

And in one hundred thousand beds
behind one hundred thousand walls
one hundred thousand girls are kissing
one hundred thousand guys awake.
And I wouldn't care about it
if you weren't one of them.
Oh, I wouldn't care...

And after one hundred thousand dreams
in one hundred thousand long nights,
one hundred thousand doubts keep
one hundred thousand guys awake.
And I wouldn't care about it
if I weren't one of them.
Oh, I wouldn't care...
Oh, I wouldn't care...

*die for: negative meaning, it means "rather die" in this context
**literal translation. Paraphrase: something like "disconsolate".

"zum Sterben" isn't something positive, not something "to die for" but something that's so bad that you'd rather die.

"nur ein winzig kleines Stück," means the same as the line before it.
And "einsehen" rather is "accept".
So I'd made that sentence to:
"And just a second right before I accept it,
just a tiny little part [of the way before I arrive at accepting it it is still remaining],
that one word abides and remains: "Back"."

About your first footnote, "happiness" sounds like the best translation of it in this context.
