Look well little one

Versions: #1#2
Look well little one, look well
On the plain below
At the height of the reeds
Between sky and windmill
A man approaches
Whom I do not know
Look well little one, look well

Is he a distant neighbour
A lost traveller
One returning from war
A merchant selling lace
Is he an abbot bearing
Those false tidings
That aid one's aging
Is it my brother coming
To tell me that it is time
For a little less hate between us
Or is it nothing but the wind
Disturbing the sand a little
And forming mirages
To pass our time

Look well little one, look well
On the plain below
At the height of the reeds
Between sky and windmill
A man approaches
Whom I do not know
Look well little one, look well

He's not a neighbour
His horse is too noble
To be from these parts
Or to be returning from war
He's not an abbot
His horse is too humble
To belong to the church
He's not a merchant
His horse is too light
His clothing too white
And no traveller
Has crossed the bridge
Since father's death
Nor knows us by name

Look well little one, look well
On the plain below
At the height of the reeds
Between sky and windmill
A man approaches
Whom I do not know
Look well little one, look well

No it's not my brother
His horse would have drunk
No it's not my brother
He would no longer dare it
There is nothing here anymore
Of use to him
No it's not my brother
My brother might have died
This midday shadow
Would be more tormented
If it was of him
Come on, it must be the wind
Disturbing the sand a little
To pass our time

Look well little one, look well
On the plain below
At the height of the reeds
Between sky and windmill
A man is leaving
Whom we will not know
Look well little one, look well
You must dry your tears
A man is leaving
Whom we will not know
You can put away the weapons

Mon frère a pu mourir -> "might have died". "pouvoir" means something like "possibly" here.

Thanks - that makes more sense to me - I just didn't think it was quite right. I'll trust your word on this! :-)

Do you think there is any significance in the shift from connaître to savoir in the last verse?

petit élève    木, 10/09/2015 - 13:13

That's a common way of saying:
"Je me demande ce qui a pu se passer" -> "I wonder what could possibly have happenend"
"Il a pu dire ça sous le coup de la colère" -> "maybe he just said that because he was angry"
"comment j'aurais pu savoir ça?" -> "how could I have possibly known that?"

That's a case of "savoir/connaître" choice. "savoir" is the unusual way of saying in that case. It's only used in poetry. Except for that, the meaning is the same I think.

Thanks - yes, it makes more and more sense the more I think about it. :-)
