Shadows of the Destiny
Sombras di Destino
Parti pa terra longe
Foi sempre nha ilusão
E ali ja'm esta
Di sorriso falso
Margurado e triste
Ta vaga di mar em mar
Ta corrê di vento em vento
Em busca di um futuro
Entre sombras di distino
Nha vida ê zig-zagant'
Sina di um fidjo caboverdiano
Num paz inconstante
Cma distino di um cigano
M'ta vivê tormentado
Num mundo cheio di maldade
Nha sorte ê dori e magoado
Na um silencio di sodade
Shadows of the Destiny
To leave for a distant land
was always my illusion
And here I am finally
With a forced smile,
Bitter and sad
I will wander from sea to sea
I will travel from wind to wind
Searching for a future
Amidst the shadows of the destiny
My life is an endless toing and froing
It's the fate of a Cape-verdian son
To live an unconstant peace
Like the fate of a gypsy
I will live with torments
In a world filled with evil
My destiny is so hurt and sorrowful
Into a silence of longing

Thanks for the translation. Here are a couple of questions:
1. In the title, destiny does not require the definite article. "Shadows Of Destiny"
2. "was always my illusion" -- How about "was always illusive to me" ?
3. "My life is an endless toing and froing" -- toing and froing are not words. How about "coming and going"
4. In modern English a woman would not call herself a "son of Cape Verde" -- perhaps the translation could be "a child of...." or "a daughter of...." or even "a native of...." ?
Hi, Berliner25, I agree with all you suggestions, thank you. Well, as for 4), it is not clear to a native, if the text is made for a woman to sing it, actually "son" is referred either to men or women, it is a general sense, and not only for children and in Portuguese, masculine genre is preferred. Maybe there can be another ways to render this line much better.
