Annie Girardot

We were all lying down
The four children around their father
The shutters were drawn
Only a few tears of daylight dared
To slide into the cold sad room
It was two days after
It was a January the 5th
We were all five stretched out

My father gathered us up
With his two so very strong arms
He didn’t speak, he was lost like
Annie Girardot at the Airport 1
We cried all five together
Holding each other on their big bed
A bundle of sorrow
Thrown on their big bed
He had just buried his wife
In the early afternoon

I don’t remember the few words
That managed to escape from his beard
Perhaps they were lovely words
I only remember his beard
“I’m not going to die straight away”
Or maybe “I’m really going to die”
I don’t remember his words anymore
Nor much else
Me, I had slipped under

We cried all five together
Holding each other on their bed
A bundle of sorrow
Thrown on their big bed
He had just buried his wife
In the early afternoon
We don’t remember everything
But we never forget

  • 1. A reference to Annie Girardot in the 1969 file Un homme qui me plaît
In the scene in question she waits for her lover at the airport. The plane arrives but he’s not to be seen clip

I thought that was a bit of an odd line so tried to rationalise it a bit. So you think its more like "to die completely"?
