After a while of pretty much abandoning the song, I came to see if anyone had tried to translate it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtMP7Nw0E3g

I hope some of you might have already heard the other versions of it:
English: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-w2m-TeLi6I
Italian: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1BVDWCd8ZA
French: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHutAPGoSDM
German (Swiss-German/Allemanic): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0y3OjJ3ib0w

Anyway, these are the lyrics that have been floating around the internet:

Quote:

Contre les ondes, cun nussa schpada i nus mans // Contre las uondas, cun nussa speda in nus mans
Contre il mar, nus arain contre la paraid,
Contre la misiergia, in vista de nus inimi,
Contre l'organtz, cin spai'a ni la faccia.

In avulsa sai d'atras das nuvlas,

La chantzun in nus cour,
La chantzun das muntognas.

Il sun a d'il vent, il sens d'artgent

Il clom dallas muntognas,
Il clom dallas Alps,
Il clom dallas patria,
La chantzun in nus cour,
Il clom dallas muntognas,
Il clom dallas Alps,
Il clom dallas patria,
La chantzun in nus cour,
La chantzun das muntognas.

No one seems to agree on the verse in BOLD if it's written correctly or not. I can understand it to a certain degree but wouldn't be able to translate it completely unless fellow Italian/French users assist me. If there's a Romansh user on here, even better!

So far this is all I've got: (3 words I had to look up in a dictionary)

Against the waves, with our swords in hand
against the sea, our backs against the wall
against the indigence, in the sight of our enemy
against the storms**, that strikes our faces.

A calling went through the clouds,
a sign, from the cranes in flight.

The call of the mountains,
the call of the Alps,
the call of our homeland,
the song in our hearts,
the song of the mountains.

What is that **, that's deep in our hearts?
and the question, that awaken the world?
what's that **, that *** from heaven?
and that ** that sound that comes from the harp?
a cry rang through the winds,
a warning, the call of the cranes.

The call of the mountains,
the call of the Alps,
the call of our homeland,
the song in our hearts,
the song of the mountains.

The sound of the wind, a burning sensation.

The call of the mountains,
the call of the Alps,
the call of our homeland,
the song in our hearts,
the song of the mountains
the call of the Alps,
the call of our homeland,
the song in our hearts,
the song of the mountains.

** or *** means I don't know the word. I know the song might never be translated properly, but I found it fun to challenge myself on breaking down the song. Any help is appreciated, and all discussions are welcome.

I'm bumping this post and adding some notes I've come up since I last posted this:

Contre les ondes, cun nussa schpada i nus mans, // Against the waves, with our swords in our hands
* Here there might be a typo, it should be "nossa" not "nussa" (meaning "our").
* The word for sword is spelled "spada" so the "ch" in between is incorrect. (It's pronounced like that though).
* "nus" means "we" and can be used as "our".

Contre il mar, nus arain contre la paraid, // Against the sea, our back against the wall
* In Romansh and every other dialect except for Puter and Vallader, the word "sea" (mar) is feminine, meaning that the lyrics might be using words in either of those two dialects or might be entire in either of those two. Here, the word is masculine "il mar".
* arain = singular arains = plural to mean ones "back" in Puter, in Vallader it's "rain".

Contre la misiergia, in vista de nus inimi, // Against the misery in view of our enemy
* Couldn't find the word for "misery" but it also sounds like "misergia"
* inimi (singular) = enemy (in Vallader, in Puter "inimih")

Contre l'organtz, cin spai'a ni la faccia. // Against the storm(?) which strikes us in the face
* Have yet to find the meaning of "organtz". In other versions, the word storm and rain are used. But the words for those are as follows:
rain = plover / raining hard = daratgar, razzer, drachar, / storm= urizi, orizi
* mispelling here for "faccia" (face), it should be "fatscha"
* "cin spai'a" I've guessed means "that strikes/beats in [our] face" based on the same line in the other versions:
- English: ...roaring at our faces
- Italian: ...che cadono su di noi
- French: ...s'abattant sur nos visages
- German (Swiss-German/Alemannic): ... wo heftig eus id gsichter schlönd

======================================================================

In avulsa sai d'atras das nuvlas, // There's a warning(?) behind the clouds
* I've yet to find what "avulsa" means, it could be two words = a vulsa [In Spanish, "avisa" means to "warn", I assume it would be the same here]
* same with "sai", no meaning found
* atras (through, as in "to go through" in Romansh and Sursilvan dialect)

Un segn, da svoul, da gru // A sign from a crane in flight
* It sounds like "da svoul a da gru"
* grü (singular) grus (plural) = crane
* typo, gru shoud be "grü"

======================================================================

The chorus is accurate since I was able to match up all the words.

======================================================================

Ve che da avutg, o che profound in nus cur?
* avutg might be "adatg" (meaning to look or watch [for something])
* in nus cur might be "in nus cuor", "cur" alone means "with" = in our with(?) vs. in our heart

E la dumonda, cuc vu svegliar a mund?, // And the question, what awakens the world?
* dumonda = demand / question
* cuc sounds like "che"
* svegliar = arouse

Ve tge da avutg, tge su da pra zi tschiel
* su da pra zi tschiel sounds like "sgrattatschêl", or at the very least the correct spelling for "tschiel" is "tschêl"
* pra = meadow (if it's not a typo)

E la tgadur, il uartga sa da sun da l'arpa?,
* tgadur might be two words = tga dur
* looks like "uartga" is a typo for "artga" (no "u" before it)
* The line is as follows in the other versions:
- English: What's that augur, resounding from the lyre's strings?
- Italian: E quel presagio espresso dalla lira?
- French: Et ce présage qui sort brûlant des lyres des dieux?
- German (Swiss-German/Alemannic): Was verspricht mir de klang vo däre harfe?

In avultga sur a d'il vent, un avis, il clom da grü,
* sur = about or more than
* avis = notification

Il sun a d'il vent, il sens d'artgent
* sens might be "senz" or "senza" = without
* artgent might mean "silver" like it does in French. The line is as follows in the other versions:
- English: either "A cry rang on" or "the outcry of the cranes"
- Italian: ...i segni nel ciel
- French: Les signes dans le ciel
- German (Swiss-German/Alemannic): ...es zeiche zu mer

Bumping this after a year of inactivity. If anyone is bored enough, take a look and see if you figure anything else out.

After some more listening, I made a few changes to what might be the correct lyrics.

Contre1 les undas, cun nossa spada e noss mans
Contre il mar, noss arains contre[?] la paraid, [?] - sounds like "puncta" ("punct" = "point") or "punct a"
Contre la miseria, in vista noss inimi,
Contre l'orcans, cin spai'a[?]2 ni la fatscha. "orcan" = ("hurricane")

Una vusch sai[?] d'atras das nuvlas3, [?] "sain" (breast) "sur" = (about)

  • 1. phonetically, she's saying 'contre' but the correct spelling/pronunciation for 'against' is "cunter"
  • 2. "spaisa" maybe?
  • 3. the correct spelling/pronunciation for "clouds" is "nivels"
  • 4. vut?
