The woman for whom this song was written was named Albina Luna Perez who worked in tobacco plantations and would be gone for months at a time. She also worked in a textile factory. She was called La Negra because she was the only one in her family who was a brunette.
The songwriter bought her a silk shawl from Tepic (back then it was well known for its silk). In those days it was a gift given to the
woman you wanted to marry.
