Keskiyön Cowboy

Olo on kuin sekaisella olohuoneella
juhlien jälkeen tai juoneella
soitit minulle ettet jaksa valuttaa
ja mun on pakko tulla
koska sua haluttaa

Ajan sataa luoksesi
teenhän mitä vain vuoksesi
ajan sataa luoksesi
ja teen mitä vain vuoksesi

Lada kulkee sataa vettä saavista
sä luultavasti tilannettasi et aavista
jos nyt tulee hukkareissu
niin fiilis raju on
jos kaiken tämän jälkeen olen tajuton

Ajan sataa luoksesi
teenhän mitä vain vuoksesi
ajan sataa luoksesi
ja teen mitä vain vuoksesi

Kaltaistani et
löydä toista
ja tuskin edes
yrität moista
mua et voi ostaa
kaupoista
olen yksi keskiyön
cowboysta

Viimein avaan ovesi
ja tällä hetkellä
tajuan etten ole
huviretkellä
silmiesi ilme mulle
kaiken selittää
on aikomukses
oikopäätä minut selittää

Ajan sataa luoksesi
teenhän mitä vain vuoksesi
ajan sataa luoksesi
ja teen mitä vain vuoksesi

Olo on kuin sekaisella olohuoneella
juhlien jälkeen tai juoneella
soitit minulle ettet jaksa valuttaa
ja mun on pakko tulla
koska sua haluttaa

Ajan sataa luoksesi
teenhän mitä vain vuoksesi
tass ajan sataa luoksesi
ja teen mitä vain vuoksesi

Kaltaistani et
löydä toista

Midnight Cowboy

Feeling like a messy living room
After the party or having drunk
You called me and told that you're tired of dripping
And I have to come
Because you're desiring

I'm driving madly to you
I'd do anything for you
I'm driving madly to you
And I'd do anything for you

Lada is moving, the sky is pouring
I don't think you foresee your situation
If this is a pointless journey
It's gonna be rough
If after everything I've done I'm done

I'm driving madly to you
I'd do anything for you
I'm driving madly to you
And I'd do anything for you

You won't find
Another one like me
And I doubt
That you even try
You can't buy me
From a grocery store
I'm one of
the midnight cowboys

At last I open your door
And at this very moment
I realize that
This is no cakewalk
The look in your eyes
Says it all to me
You are going to
Pin me down straightaway

I'm driving madly to you
I'd do anything for you
I'm driving madly to you
And I'd do anything for you

Feeling like a messy living room
After the party or having drunk
You called me and told that you're tired of dripping
And I have to come
Because you're desiring

I'm driving madly to you
I'd do anything for you
I'm driving madly to you
And I'd do anything for you

You won't find
Another man like me
And I doubt
That you will even try
You can't buy me
From a grocery store
I'm one of
The midnight cowboys

I'm driving madly to you
I'd do anything for you
I'm driving madly to you
And I'd do anything for you

I had ChatGPT explain me the pun you couldn’t translate. Thought it did pretty good, so I thought I would share. Still unsure what the pun means/conveys though.

"In Finnish, "Lada kulkee sataa vettä saavista" translates to "The Lada drives past a hundred buckets of water." The pun relies on the similarity in pronunciation between the Finnish words "saavista" and "sataa."

"Saavista" means "from buckets" or "out of buckets" in English, while "sataa" means "to rain." In the sentence, the wordplay occurs because "sataa" can also mean "a hundred" in Finnish.

So, when you say "Lada kulkee sataa vettä saavista," it can be understood in two different ways:

  • The Lada is driving past a hundred buckets of water.
  • The Lada is driving past water that is raining out of the buckets.

The pun relies on the double meaning of "sataa" to create a humorous effect. Unfortunately, this wordplay does not have a direct equivalent in English, as the pun is specific to the Finnish language."

Lada is a brand of car.

Hey, thought I'd chime in as ChatGPT didn't seem to get it quite right. This is how I (native Finnish speaker) would explain the pun:
It's a conflation of two sentences, with one word in common, but as homonyms.
"Lada kulkee sataa" = "The Lada is driving a hundred [kilometers per hour]."
"Sataa vettä [kuin] saavista" = "It's raining [like] from a bucket", a common phrase meaning basically that it's raining really hard. The idea here is that the rainfall is so heavy that it looks/feels like someone is pouring water from a bucket.
The pun basically is just that the word "sataa" can be understood in two ways, and the narrator continues the sentence from one meaning to another seamlessly.

Additional fun fact, this is quite similar to a joke format that was popular in Finland a few years back. The idea was to combine two compound words that have a part in common into a completely new word, and try to imagine what the resulting word means. Usually the results were either NSFW or otherwise horrifying, but nevertheless funny to imagine. As a tame example, "tuomiopäivä" (doomsday) + "päiväkoti" (kindergarten) = "tuomiopäiväkoti" (Doomsday home? A kindergarten where the kids are sentenced? Who knows.)

“teenhän mitä vain vuoksesi” means that he would do anything for her, and she should know that already, correct? The ending -hän conveys that she should already know that, from what I've been taught. I know it can depend on the context but seems to me that this makes the most sense. Unsure how you would add that into the translation, but it's an important thing to add, in my opinion.

The 3rd line of the 9th verse is supposed to say “Taas ajan sataa luoksesi”. Taas can be translated to “again”, but also has other meanings I haven’t figured out yet depending on context. But I believe “again” would be a fitting transition, due to its context.

Would it be smart to request another translation of this? I feel like this song could be better translated. Only thing is I can’t request additional translations.

Thanks! Also, hate to ask not on the forum page, but is it possible you can add “Taas” to the beginning of the 9th verse 3rd line? It’s in the song and it’s been bugging me it doesn’t show up in the transcription. Just haven’t had the chance to request the change on the forum thread.

Correction, it’s two A’s and one S. But otherwise in the right spot

I got a notification saying “your “Keskiyön Cowboy” was unpublished, then a notification that my request was translated by, but it never said who translated it. It linked here. Any idea why this is the case?

Someone thought that because there was an English one already, it has been unpublished. I apologize for that, I reopened your request and left a note, which is what I probably should have done in the first place.

Thanks! Figured something like that happened.
