Norvegiană

Liti Kjersti Som Stalldreng

Liti Kjersti ho var så vakker ei møy,
saddeli hei
kongens son vil for hennar døy.
i brynjo tor hon ei.

Så reid hon seg til kongens gård,
saddeli hei
tar du konge nokon stalldreng i år.
i brynjo tor hon ei.

Slike små drengir likar eg best,
saddeli hei
eg får ein stalldreng, eg tar'kje hans hest.
i brynjo tor hon ei.

Dei åtte år hadd' hon hestann til vann,
saddeli hei
det niande år då vart ho med bån.
i brynjo tor hon ei.

Så kom det bod i kongens gård,
saddeli hei
din stalldreng hev fengid så vent eit bån.
i brynjo tor hon ei.

Og Peder han falt for kongen på kne,
saddeli hei
å kjære min fader, du gjeve kon til.
i brynjo tor hon ei.

Liti Kjersti hon falt for kongen på kne,
saddeli hei
å kjære konge, du gjeve kon til.
i brynjo tor hon ei.

Tak no liti Kjersti og sett på ditt fang,
saddeli hei
gjev'a gullkrone og dronningnavn.
i brynjo tor hon ei.

Little Kjersti as a stable attendant

Little Kjersti was a maiden so beautiful
saddeli hei
the king's son would for her die
she didn't rip the mail.

so she rode to the king's estate
saddeli hei
"do you, king, hire a stable attendant this year"
she didn't rip the mail

"I like such young lads the best"
saddeli hei
"I get a stable attendant, I'm not taking his horse"
she didn't rip his mail

She cared for the horses those eight years,
saddeli hei
the ninth year she became pregnant
she didn't rip the mail

then came a message to the king's estate
saddeli hei
your stall attendant have borne such a beautiful child
she didn't rip the mail

And Peder he fell on his knees before the king
saddeli hei
"oh dear father, give judgement"
she didn't rip the mail

Little Kjersti she fell on her knees before the king
saddeli hei
"oh dear king, give judgement"
she didn't rip the mail

"Now take Little Kjersti and put her on your lap"
saddeli hei
"give 'er a golden crown and a queen's name"
she didn't rip the mail.

Little Kjersti wants to be able to tend to the king's horses, but that was traditionally a man's job, so she disguises herself as a boy and gets the job. It's discovered that she's not a guy when she becomes pregnant with the king's son, who is in love with her. They ask the king for his judgement, and he gives them his blessing.

Thanks! especially for the comment, I wasn't all that sure what this song meant before.

You're very welcome! I posted the comment because I knew that the meaning would be hard to understand. Norwegian folk songs are pretty random in general, and unless you're used to the way the lyrics are expressed, the interpretation can prove quite difficult

Describing them as "random" is quite harsh, I would say poetic instead Smile

Nope. Random. They're trolling (seems fitting somehow) Smile
