Maringá

Foi numa léva
Que a cabocla Maringá
Ficou sendo a retirante
Que mais dava o que falá.

E junto dela
Veio alguem que suplicou
Prá que nunca se esquecesse
De um caboclo que ficou.

Estribilho:
        Maringá, Maringá,
        Depois que tu partiste,
        Tudo aqui ficou tão triste,
        Que eu agarrei a Maringá.

        Maringá, Maringá,
        Para havê felicidade,
        É preciso que a saudade
        Vá batê noutro lugá.

        Maringá, Maringá,
        Volta aqui pro meu Sertão
        Pra de novo o coração
        De um caboclo assossegá.

Antigamente
Uma alegria sem igual
Dominava aquela gente
Da cidade de Pombal.

Mas veio a seca
Toda chuva foi-se embora
Só restando então as água
Dos meus óio quando chóra.

        {Estribilho}

Maringá*

It was in a group
that Maringá, a cabocla1,
became known for being a migrant
that arose comments2.

And, next to her,
came along someone who begged her
to never forget
a caboclo who stayed behind.

Refrain:

Maringá, Maringá
After you were gone
everything here became so sad
that I steadied in Maringá*.

Maringá, Maringá
If one wants happiness to exist
it's needed longing
to go knock at another door.

Maringá, Maringá
come back to my Sertão
To settle down the heart
of a caboclo.

Formerly
an unique joy
took over those people
from the Pombal city.
´
But then the drought took over
the rain went away
What is left are the teardrops
of my eyes when I cry.

(Refrain)

  • 1. Caboclo & Cabocla (male and female noun, respectively) has no a proper translation into English, at least not known by me. WordReference came up with this: "mixed-race Brazilian, ranger, farm hand", so I prefered to leave the original word, although I might change it if someone comes up with another suggestion.
  • 2. "Dar o que falar" is an idiom. It is frequently said when a person is target of several comments and opinions.

Wikipedia:
Maringá is a city and municipality in southern Brazil founded in 1947 as a planned urban area.
The city takes its name from a song by Joubert de Carvalho in honour of his great love, Maria do Ingá, latter shortened to Maringá, that at the time of establishment of the settlement was very popular in the media, thus the city being known as the Song City.
