The old Francisco

Portugheză

O Velho Francisco

Já gozei de boa vida
Tinha até meu bangalô
Cobertor, comida
Roupa lavada
Vida veio e me levou

Fui eu mesmo alforriado
Pela mão do Imperador
Tive terra, arado
Cavalo e brida
Vida veio e me levou

Hoje é dia de visita
Vem aí meu grande amor
Ela vem toda de brinco
Vem todo domingo
Tem cheiro de flor

Quem me vê, vê nem bagaço
Do que viu quem me enfrentou
Campeão do mundo
Em queda de braço
Vida veio e me levou

Li jornal, bula e prefácio
Que aprendi sem professor
Freqüentei palácio
Sem fazer feio
Vida veio e me levou

Hoje é dia de visita
Vem aí meu grande amor
Ela vem toda de brinco
Vem todo domingo
Tem cheiro de flor

Eu gerei dezoito filhas
Me tornei navegador
Vice-rei das ilhas
Da Caraíba
Vida veio e me levou

Fechei negócio da China
Desbravei o interior
Possuí mina
De prata, jazida
Vida veio e me levou

Hoje é dia de visita
Vem aí meu grande amor
Hoje não deram almoço, né
Acho que o moço até
Nem me lavou

Acho que fui deputado
Acho que tudo acabou
Quase que
Já não me lembro de nada
Vida veio e me levou

The old Francisco

I have enjoyed a good life
I even had my bungalow
Comforter, food
Clean clothes
But life came and took it from me

I was freed
By the hand of the Emperor
I had land, plow
Horse and bridle
But life came and took it from me

Today is visit day
Here comes my love
She comes with her earrings
She comes every Sunday
She smells like flowers

Whoever sees me, doesn’t even see a part of me
As someone once saw when confronted me
The World Champion arm wrestler
But life came and took it from me

I read newspaper, leaflet and preface
Which I learned without a teacher
I used to go to palaces quite often
And I did it well
But life came and took it from me

Today is visit day
Here comes my love
She comes with her earrings
She comes every Sunday
She smells like flowers

I had eighteen daughters
I became a sailor
Vice-regent of
Caribbean Islands
But life came and took it from me

I made a perfect deal
I explored the countryside
I owned a silver mine,
A mineral deposit
But life came and took it from me

Today is visit day
Here comes my love
Today they didn’t serve the lunch, right?
And I suppose that the guy didn’t even
bathe me

I think I was a congressman
I think it's all over
Almost
I don’t remember anything
Life came and took it from me

Thank you for your translation -- it's pretty close to what I thought, but Portugues is not one of my languages.

The one question I have is the the usage of "O velho" -- "the old" in your translation. In French, they have the expression "mon vieux / ma vielle" -- literally meaning "my old" in English. In Spanish, they have "viejo mio / vieja mia" -- again literally meaning "my old" in English. In each case, it means, "my old FRIEND" in common usage, I suspect this is the case with the use of "velho" in Portugues, and I wanted to know if this is the case. Thank you.
