Thank you, Dr. Juanita. The problem with this beautiful imagery you provided is that it's just one representation of a more vast community -- hence the terms Polynesia [many islands], Micronesia [small islands], and Melanesia [black (skinned) islands]. I personally don't agree with these terminologies, which is why I prefer Oceania instead.
Sorry it took long, but with the limited amount of space I was given, I was only able to include a mere few of the many ethnic groups represented in Oceania. I was able to use the picture you provided (pictured bottom right), along with a beautiful Māori chieftess (bottom center), a stern Aboriginal crone (bottom left) from Australia, a lovely Sāmoan woman (center right) adorned in the traditional headdress or tuiga, a Rapa Nui maiden (center) honoring her tupuna [ancestors] in the form of the famed monolithic Mo'ai statues of Easter Island, a male Tahitian dancer (center left), the late queen Sālote of Tonga (top right), a Polynesian male (top center) with a tā moko or facial tattoo, and a native Hawaiian woman (top left) performing one of the many traditional Hula 'Auana.
Thanks :) I'm glad you liked it.
yes, Fiji is part of Oceania :)
Request for comment; I should have said this earlier, but I changed the name to Oceanian Folk. People from Oceania are Oceanians (source: I live in New South Wales, Australia). Oceania covers four regions; Australasia (Australia and New Zealand), Melanesia (Papua New Guinea, Fiji, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia), Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, etc) and Micronesia (Micronesia, Guam, the Northern Marianas, Palau and Nauru). I do have a question though; should I merge the Aboriginal Folk artist here? Indigenous Australians have different music and dance to the Pacific Islands (it's similar to PNG's though), but I guess Australia is in Oceania. Any thoughts?
Hi. Since you already have a listing for Aboriginal Folk, I think it's best to leave it as it is.
Currently searching the internet and translating these songs into English. I've done almost all the Māori ones (all the Māori songs that were translated into Tongan have been translated into English too).
greetings, Dr. Juanita! Thank you so much for your commentary and the link you provided. You have a point.
It would probably be better off to call it Oceanic Folk instead? Polynesia is only one of three major subsections of Oceania, and is also the most well known. To choose a country would be difficult because you have several countries that exist in that one area alone. I suppose we could create different entries for each language (Tongan, Hawai'ian, Māori, Sāmoan, etc.), but I personally prefer to keep them together.
