The pig

There is a most disgusting condition in this world.
Everyone who uses any drugs has it.
This condition is called the "pig" 1.

At night, feeling sad, we are sitting at our place,
And we are holding bottles of beer in each hand,
But beer is nothing for us,
Of course, we don't have a kief. What would it come from?

Suddenly one friend (he is the Maker of Joints,
The Giver of Kief, and the Owner of Marijuana)
Took out a package from his pocket
And, without cheating, rolled a joint for everyone of us,
We smoked this. Wow, it's so good!
We filled our lungs with so much blue smoke
We were sitting merrily. Shit, everything was good
Until the damned pig showed up!

What the pig! It's so asshole!
The pig, the pig, we stuffed our mouths with food,
A pig, the pig, one more drag,
We all were destroying whole food stock!
The pig, the pig told us: "Y'all need food!",
The pig, the pig told us: "Y'all need food!".
It's the disgusting pig!
It's the disgusting pig!

Having opened the fridge, with a hungry look,
We inspected everything that lay here:
Lard, canned goods, sausages, and salads,
We were destroying everything we saw,
We were devouring all this. The pig sat here and was glad
That we cleaned up the apartament
And queued for the toilet!

We ate everything what could be eaten,
And suddenly a good idea came in our heads,
We ran to the convenience store,
Leaving a stinky trail behind us.

Food in this convenience store was decreasing,
We devoured even what were lying on the far shelves.
How might it all fit in our bellies?
We ate Snickers, Bounties, Mars bars, and Twixes
With stupid smiles on our lips,
Roasted peanuts stuck between our teeth.
The store became empty, the seller was very glad,
And we went to the central food warehouse.
In the morning, happy people will awake,
But if their bellies are empty, their happiness will pass,
Nobody will believe that the four of us
Ate all food in our city. What a bummer!

Our whole city is crying without food,
Hungry women can't feed their little children, children swell with hunger,
They all are waiting for humanitarian aid from our fraternal countries.
And all this was done by the pig!

It's the disgusting pig!
It's the disgusting pig!

Mmm... sorry to crash the party, but for all I know "munchies" refers to hunger itself, not to hungry people. "To get the munchies" -> "to get a craving for snacks", so things like "filthy munchies" sound pretty odd.
I suppose the PC word for a greedy eater would "glutton" (of French origin, très chic), but "hog" or "pig" is pretty common too.

AFAIK, the munchies happen mainly after smoking weed but I might be mistaken because of the lack of personal experience...

So we need a red-eyed buddy to clarify this matter... I hope he will join us soon. ;)

Bit of both... munchies can be used for any sudden hunger but it is rather associated with the effects of weed. :)

Of course - just adding a bit of clarification on the word 'munchies'. I'm sure you are right to stick with the pig :)

SaintMarkSaintMark    вс, 18/03/2018 - 19:44

why do you write a doctorate on K mironov's translation, rather than adding your own.

SaintMarkSaintMark    вс, 18/03/2018 - 20:20

you know i don't mind at all, you can write a whole book, i'm just not sure konstantin will actually look at it. at some point when the songs of Sektor have all been translated i'll probably go through each of them and put all translations into proper english. but translating myself takes too long and the results are very meager. rather than having one optimized translation, its often better to have two, so you can compare what the text actually meant. people here seem to obsess over perfecting translations while I often go for the main meaning only. two different ways of approach but each have their merit.

"kief" does not exist in English.

Well, it does. ;) https://www.thefreedictionary.com/kief It comes from Arabic, as well as its Russian derivative, though it's used much more seldom. So your suggestion is of a great value.

petit élève wrote:

so much filled our lungs -> putting "so much" in front changes the meaning of the sentence (well, in that case it makes it rather meaningless). Qualificatives must stay close to the object they qualify: "we filled our lungs with so much blue smoke"

Thanks, I missed that line among the three starting with "We..." Konstantin should further arrange his texts in a way which ensures avoiding such repetitions.
I hope Mark wouldn't mind posting such lectures here... :)

Hmm, not quite convinced by those chocolate plurals, although this isn't an exact science. If pressed I would say:
Snickers, Bounties, Mars bars, and Twixes

Bounties I'm least sure of. As a proper noun perhaps Bountys is preferable. I don't like the addition of "grocer's apostrophes" in plurals ;)

SaintMarkSaintMark    пн, 19/03/2018 - 15:15

you know, for a year i posted sektor requests and noone took interest, so whatever you write, it's a good thing to me.. :)

BratBrat    пн, 19/03/2018 - 18:47

A bunch of dudes got some weed. And -you see- they smoked all of it. The weed was so strong that it caused a hellish hunger that in its turn led to the lack of food in the whole city...

Apparently my cheeky remark missed its mark...

Mine too. :) We could never become Russian citizens, I'm afraid...

BratBrat    вт, 20/03/2018 - 11:41

Well, frankly, I expected that you would write something like this: "Pardon, vous savez, je ne comprends toujours pas. Je veux que vous l'écriviez en français."
And then I'd write something like "Don't you take too much trouble, let's ask Gerard Depardieu to translate the song, because he'd surely cope with it, being a citizen of the Russian Federation. Of course, Putin, being a citizen of the Russian Federation, could translate it either, but let's not bother him..."
But as you already said, the day wasn't that proper...

The meaning is coming across very well to this Brit. It doesn't read like idiomatic English in places but that kind of adds to the charm. It's a tall order, translating something like this.

In English the expression might be more; the filthy pig, the disgusting pig. Scummy is not used. Scummy is like the surface of a pond that is stagnant.
Do not forget the word 'glutton'. This is perhaps what you are truly conveying rather than a word for word translation. The artist is using the word pig/свин to convey selfish ambition and gluttonous behavior/condition.
Do you see? :)
What a pig! It's such an ...! (if you want any help contact me).
