If my sweetheart were not so tender
If my sweetheart were not so tender
If my sweetheart were not so tender, oh love,
I woudn't get out on the treshold in the evening, oh love,
If my sweetheart were not so tender, oh love,
I woudn't get out on the treshold in the evening, oh love.
Hey, hey, love, I wouldn't sigh and I wouldn't sing, hey,
Hey, hey, love, all because of longing for my sweetheart, hey.
If it weren't for my sweetheart, oh love,
I wouldn't get out into the garden at night, oh love,
If it weren't for my sweetheart, oh love,
I wouldn't get out into the garden at night, oh love.
Hey, hey, love, even mummy wouldn't scold me, hey,
Hey, hey, love, because I love my sweetheart, hey.
If my sweetheart didn't light my fire, oh love,
I wouldn't travel from place to place, oh love,
If my sweetheart didn't light my fire, oh love,
I wouldn't travel from place to place, oh love.
Hey, hey, love, (I walk) once upon a hill and then down in a valley,
Hey, hey, love, as I would only see him on the road,
Hey, hey, love, the current wouldn't reach me, hey,
Hey, hey, love, neither would problemes or doubts, hey.

De n-ar fi neica cu drag = 1. if my sweetheart were not so dear/tender to me (or adorable)
2. if it weren't for my tender/adorable sweetheart
("were" - subjunctive mood - is the correct form, although in spoken English "was" - simple past, indicative mood - is often used)
a-i fi cineva drag, a-i fi drag de cineva = something between like and love
"Guilty" sounds a bit too negative, even "to blame" or "fault" seem a bit harsh, so I'd use "if it weren't for my sweetheart".
I think "love" might sound better instead of "desire".
The first two lines of the last stanza mean that she was wandering up and down the hill hoping that she will get to meet him on the way.
"A bate drumurile, cărările" means to wander about/around, but it is used reversely (drumurile/văile m-ar bate pe mine) to be able to include the thoughts and the winds in the same expression (a-l bate vânturile = to have difficulties; a-l bate gândurile = to have doubts, worries). She supposes that she wouldn't have to go down the valley (in a negative situation) or have troubles and problems if she just met him as she hoped.
You might want to add capital letters in the title, but it's not compulsory
Imagine Romeo's and Juliet's parents having heard this song: "Hey, hey, desire, even mummy wouldn't scold me, hey, / Hey, hey, desire, because I love my sweetheart, hey." That's why we don't have great tragedies - because we treat problems early with fine music
and open up people's/parent's hearts.
