Hello. After hearing one of his songs on internet radio, I became a big fan of Udo. When I began my research into him, I was stunned to discover that he had only recently passed away. His live concerts are hugely entertaining but, not being able to speak German, I don't know what he's saying to the audience between songs. In this thread, I'm hoping that you will be kind enough to translate/transcribe for me. To anyone willing to help, you have my grateful thanks.

To begin, here is a clip from Das Letzte Koncert:

Here's the translation:
"Many thanks! Many thanks for this nice welcome, ladies and gentlemen.
It's nice to end the first part of my tour in the city which has become my hometown. It's nice to be here, to be at home.
Thanks that you're giving me this chance."

It took me hours to come up with this name, thanks for acknowledging it... Wink smile

"Many many thanks. Fate chooses our thoughts and that's what this song is about.
It's a very important song for me: "Das Leben bist Du"."

Thanks again, kas (may I call you kas?).

I can definitely recommend looking up translations to his songs as the lyrics are both meaningful and entertaining (esp. my favourites "Aber bitte mit Sahne", "Ehrenwertes Haus" and "Ich war noch niemals in New York"), something you hardly find in contemporary German schlager.

Hello magicmulder. Yes, I've looked at as many of his translations as I can. The writing is excellent.

You should also take a look at Reinhard Mey (esp. his older work) then. "Über den Wolken" (about the love of flying) is a classic, and songs like "Keine ruhige Minute" (about having a child) or "Einen Antrag auf Erteilung" (mocking bureaucracy) are great.

Vielen dank. Thank you. Prost!

Lyrics aside, this is a terrific performer. I've just had a quick run through Er Zijn Dagen (1976) and Freundliche Gesichter (1981). Great melodies, just the type of song I like. Thanks again.
