The Reward (La recompensa)

перевод на Английский

The Reward

The reward is enough
To live hour to hour, and
To die your own man

The reward is enough
To live hour to hour, and
To die your own man

Sometimes you ask if life is fair
When the cancer takes your old lady
And she's not there to see your successes

And they kill Georgie, and Charlie, and Tony,
And Carmelo, and his cousin Michael
And leave them dead, unrecognizable
And you have to bury them
And you have to cry for them
Until you can forget them

Sometimes you ask, buddy, if life is worth it
When life in the open fields of a rural home
Is so different from within the city's walls

Because commissioner Victor Fajardo stole
The money meant for the little kids' education
So they could finally leave the barrio
With a diploma instead of a bullet

Because governor Pedro Rossello
Who tried to sell us out, could never be linked
To any leader of the community

Because there are false prophets leading the church
And they're even allowed to put their lies on TV

Because war reaches even into the rural homes
And the growl of the AK-47 is heard like a wolf
Through the jodida* never-ending night

Because, Madame Governor, your government
Robs our faith and murders our hopes.

Because the people must keep on living
Facing such problems

Because Sundays in the barrio are so different
From the ones in Torrimar's million-dollar homes

Because the drunk driver senator Norberto Nieves
Could go see his own son's graduation
While thousands of prisoners are not allowed to.

Because Buzo gets house arrest while our little brother
Tempo rots in a federal prison

Because the US makes pointless wars in the Middle East

Because we must keep seeing
More hate & anger, for better ratings
More prisons & massacres
More broken dreams & tears
More stories of repression &
Trumped-up charges

Why are we living, my brother?
Sit down, and I'll tell you
We live, because the reward is to be alive,

I stood by the truth
I held on to reality
Because living isn't living
Unless you're living to overcome

I stood by the truth
I held on to reality
Because living isn't living
Unless you're living to overcome

Puerto Rican social protest song, against the crime and corruption in Puerto Rico. I'm reminded of Lou Reed's "Dirty Boulevard."

I added quick descriptive terms to the names I could (though I'm unfamiliar with Buzo or Tempo).

*Jodida -- pronounced in English like "hoe"-"THEE"-"the", used like the "universal adjective" in English. Alternative forms are jodido ("hoe"-"THEE"-"though"), jodienda ("hoe"-"thee"-"END"-"the"), or jodiendo ("hoe"-"thee"-"END"-"though")
