A giocare col bastone

- egli domandò sorridendo a Claudio.

Playing With the Stick

One day the little Claudio was playing by the doorway, when a nice old man with golden glasses passed by on the street, hunching, leaning on a stick, and right in front of the doorway he accidentally dropped the stick.
Claudio immediately took it and gave it to the old man, who smiled and said:
- Thank you, but I don't need it. I can perfectly walk without it. If you like it, keep it.
And without waiting for an answer he walked away, and seemed to be less hunchbacked than before. Claudio stayed there with the stick in his hands and didn't know what to do with it. It was an ordinary wooden stick, with a curved handle and an iron tip, and nothing else special to notice.
Claudio hit the ground with the tip two or three times, then, almost without thinking, he got on the stick and it wasn't a stick anymore, yet a horse, a wonderful black colt with a white star in its forehead, which flung galloping around the garden, neighing and making sparks come out of rocks.
When Claudio, amazed and a little afraid, managed to put his foot back on the ground, the stick was a stick again, and it didn't have hooves, yet a simple rusty tip, nor any mane, but the usual curved handle.
- I want to try again, - Claudio decided, when he caught his breath.
He got on the stick again, and this time it wasn't a horse, yet a solemn two-humped camel, and the garden was an immense desert to cross, but Claudio wasn't afraid and he inspected the distance, to see the oasis appear.
"It's certainly an enchanted stick", Claudio said to himself, getting on it for the third time. Now it was a racing car, all red, with the number written white on the hood, and the garden was a rumbling track, and Claudio always came first to the finish line.
Then the stick was a motorboat, and the garden was a lake with calm green waters, and then a space ship ploughing through space, leaving a star trail behind.
Every time Claudio put his foot back on the ground, the stick came back to its pacific look, the glossy handle, the old tip.
The afternoon passed fast with those games. By evening Claudio looked back on the street by accident, and there was the old man with golden glasses back. Claudio observed him curiously, but couldn't see anything special in him: he was an ordinary old gentleman, a bit tired of walking.
- Do you like the stick? - He asked, smiling to Claudio.
Claudio thought he wanted it back, and he handed it to him, blushing.
But the old man waved him off.
- Keep it, keep it, - he said. - What can I do with a stick at this point? You can fly with it, I'd only be able to lean on it. I'll lean on the wall and it will be the same.
And he walked away smiling, because there's no person in the world happier than an old man who can gift something to a child.
