To answer your questions in your commentary, both spiders and dragonflies aren't considered beasts in the traditional sense. But there instances in the English language where we do use the word 'beast[s]' to describe them. 'The eight-legged beasts', for example. Even people like yourself and I can be called beasts. We call people who do bad things beasts, or people who act in a 'beastly' way. It all depends on the context.
However, I don't know if the Russian language uses the word so liberally like we do [“звери” vs “твари”].
Regarding the gender of the spider, using the feminine was just a poetic decision on my part. In the same that I used the masculine for wolf and neuter for the owl.
