Dansevise

Oppe i li, oppe i li,
der stend ei liti kanne,
fyrst den er full av øl og vin,
dansar jomfru Anne.

Oppe i li, oppe i li,
der stend ei liti tægje;
fire vikor til vetre-tid,
dansar jomfru Hæge.

Oppe i li, oppe i li,
der heng ei liti skore;
fire vikor til vetre-tid,
dansar jomfru Tore.

Submitter's comment:
Et barnerim med tone av Eilif Amundsen og Morten Bing. Mellomspillet er en del av "Lyckliga Henrik's Polka", etterspillet er irsk hornpipe som heter "Staten Island Hornpipe".

Dance song

Up on the hillside, up on the hillside
There stands a little pot (can)
Only when it is poured full of beer and wine
Will the maiden Anne dance

Up on the hillside, up on the hillside
There stands a little strawbasket*
Four weeks before wintertime
The maiden Hæge dances.

Up on the hillside, up on the hillside
There hangs a little iron hook*
Four weeks before wintertime
The maiden Tore dances.

Författarens kommentar:

Ok, not entirely sure about the translation here. The problem is that some words may have several meanings and it is often the context which gives the right understanding. When there aren´t that many words in the song there isn´t a lot of context to use which is often the case when it comes to lullabies, dance songs and texts like these.

* A “tægje” is a small straw basket which was used to keep sewing needles and yarn in.
* “ Skore” can mean a lot of things: a verb for cutting something, a small pebble used to build stone walls, but also an iron hook where one would hang a cooking pot over an open fireplace and since the song says “der heng..”(there hangs..”) that would be my guess here.

Thanks! is there no background information for this one? meaning, is it just a simple barnerim with no special meanings?

btw, 3rd line - vin -> vine ?

Ups! Typo in 3rd line: Wine...
No, sorry, as yet I don´t have any more info on this song although in my ears it sounds more like a dance song than a barnerim (nursury rhyme) as it contains alcohol..Smile

...and beer, not bier. I use a dictation program which transcribes what I dictate on to the screen, Unfortunately it misspells a lot...sorry:)

It is the album inlay that states it's a barnerim, besides, I thought everyone in Scandinavia drinks alcohol, even children Wink

I didn't notice the bier btw - my extensive self immersion in all Germanic languages is starting to show signs Smile
