I'm pretty sure "chicano" is not a demeaning term, but if you see it as one, please excuse me.
one small tip for you, if you plan on taking arabic and then easily transition into hebrew - forget about it. although under the same family, they have almost nothing in common.
on a more personal note, when studying a language choose the one you like, not the one you need or think you'll need - that's my motto :).
