Dolores la petenera

Siempre de negro vestía,
a un mal fario encadená,
la Petenera vivía
como una rosa enlutá.
Los puesto y los colmaos,
la guitarra y el mal vino
sabían de sus pecaos,
de sus tormentos callaos
y de su maldito sino.
Y en coplas de madrugá,
ella lloraba su pena
con una voz desgarrá:

No me llames Petenera
que ese mote es mi castigo,
que ese mote es mi castigo;
ese nombre es la bandera
que está acabando conmigo.
¡Mare de mi corazón!,
y es la cruz y la ceguera
de mis tormentos mayores.
¡No me llames Petenera
que yo me llamo Dolores!
¡Dolores!

Ella subió a su calvario
y la copla la siguió,
como un eco de mal fario,
pregonando su doló.
Y no hubo un hombre siquiera
que llegara a su camino
y la mano le tendiera.
Y así de La Petenera
tuvo que cumplirse el sino.
Y después que se murió
toavía se sigue cantando
la copla que la mató:

Dolores the Petenera

Always dressed in black,
chained to a bad luck,
the Petenera lived
like a mourning rose.
The stores and the shops,
the guitar and the bad wine
knew about her sins,
of her silenced torments
and her cursed fate.
And in morning coplas,
she cried her sorrow
with a ripped voice:

Don't call me Petenera
that nickname is my punishment,
that nickname is my punishment:
that name is the flag
that is finishing me.
Mother of my heart!,
and is the cross and the blindness
of my greatest torments.
Don't call me Petenera
my name is Dolores!
Dolores!

She went up to her calvary
and the copla followed her,
like an echo of bad luck,
announcing her pain.
And there was no single man
who reached on her way
and lend her a hand.
And so La Petenera
had her fate commited.
And after she died
they're still singing
the copla that killed her:
