here's my interpretation of the troublesome verse if it's any help to you:
Running in circles - trying and trying to find a solution,
Coming up tails - If you "come up tails", you are unlucky and everything goes wrong. It´s the bad side of the coin...so in this case he can't find a solution
Heads on a science apart - he bets 'heads' on/he thinks it's more likely that they're separated by science (his work)

¹ Quando você set someone apart isso significa que você separa aquela pessoa das outras, dá um destaque a ela, é como se ela fosse melhor do que as outras. Uma tradução que pensei foi 'se importar muito com ela', embora poderia ser também 'vangloriá-la'.
² Eu acho que 'deixar os quebra-cabeças de lado' significa dizer que o amor não pode ser completamente entendido, por isso 'pensar em números e figuras' seria melhor, pois já é algo definido.
