Не видно матросов на нём;

Пустынный и мрачный гранит;

Очнувшись, является вдруг;

Опору в превратной судьбе;

The Spirit Ship

Atop the ocean's blue waves,
At the stars' first light in the heavens,
A solitary ship hurries forth,
Hurries with all sails unfurled.

Her tall masts stand proud and straight,
And on top the weather vanes make no sound,
Silently through the gun ports
The cast iron cannons look on.

There is no sound of her captain,
There is no sight of her crew.
But neither cliffs nor sand bars,
Nor storms can cause her harm.

There is an island in that ocean -
Granite deserted and grim -
There is a tomb on that island,
With an emperor burried within.

Burried without honors of war
Into the running sand by his foes,
With a heavy stone placed on top,
To keep him from leaving his grave.

In the hour of his sorrowful demise,
At each anniversary, come midnight,
To the tall shore, silently,
The spirit ship docks.

And the emperor, from his tomb
Awakened, arrives then;
His head with a tricorne covered,
His body in a grey travelling coat donned.

Crossing his powerful arms,
His head lowered to rest on his breast,
He goes forth to the ship's helm
And swiftly sets out on his route.

He hurries onward to darling France,
Where he left both glory and throne,
Where he left his son, his heir,
Where he left his old comrades at arms.

And once his dear land
Is visible in the murky night,
His heart once again flutters
And his eyes with a fire alight.

Onto the shore with great steps
Bravely and unwavering he walks,
His comrades he loudly calls
And for his marshals sternly shouts.

But the grenadiers, with their mustaches sleep
In the valley where the Elbe runs deep,
Under cold Russia's snows,
Under the pyramids' burning sands.

And his marshals heed not his call:
For some in battle have fallen,
While others watched him fall
And to a new master sold their sword.

And stamping his foot on the ground,
He angrily paces back and forth
Upon the quiet shore,
And calls loudly once more:

He calls his gracious son,
His one support in an unfortunate fate;
He promises him half the world
If only France were given to him.

But in the peak of his hopes and strength
Had his princely son wasted away,
And waiting for him, so long,
The emeperor stands all alone.

He stands and he heavily sighs,
Until the east is lit with the rising sun,
And his bitter tears fall
From his eyes onto the cold sand,

And then his magical ship,
His head lowered to rest on his breast,
He boards, and all but given up,
He begins his return trip.
