Soul of the Plains

I was born on a riverbank of the vibrant Arauca.1
I'm a brother of the foam,
of the herons, of the roses
I'm a brother of the foam,
of the herons, of the roses
and the sun.
and the sun.

I was lulled by the living Diana2 with breezes through the palms.
so I have a soul
that's like the exquisite essence
So I have a soul
that's like the exquisite essence
of crystal
of crystal.

I love, I cry, I sing, I dream,
with carnations of passion,3
with carnations of passion,
I love, I cry, I sing, I dream,
and I sing to Venezuela
with the soul of a troubadour.

This is not a word for word translation, but I tried to capture the spirit of the song.

The music of this " joropo" (a musical style from the plains) was composed by Pedro Elías Gutiérrez. Rafael Bolívar Coronado wrote the lyrics. It was part of a "zarzuela" (a musical) with the same title.
