Ave Maria Bela

Ave Maria,
mãe da nossa vida,
luz da luz verdadeira,
mãe da esperança.

Paz santa,
a alma canta para ti.
Dá-nos paz eterna
para desfrutar o céu e a terra.

És consolo,
amor e lágrimas,
És a dádiva
estimada por cada pecador.

Fé celestial,
és o fogo sempre aceso do perdão,
és o júbilo que vem de Jesus.
Graças a ti tudo é novo, Maria bela!

Ave Maria,
mãe da nossa vida,
luz da luz verdadeira,
mãe da esperança.

Mistério divino,
glória do homem;
em cada caminho
és a estrela da salvação.

Revestida de Deus,
sempre te lembras
de conduzir-nos
docemente, pelas mãos.

Fé celestial,
és o fogo sempre aceso do perdão,
és o júbilo que vem de Jesus.
Graças a ti tudo é novo, Maria bela!

Eu evitei usar plural majestático, que sempre uso em textos com teor religioso, por questão de estética, mas onde há segunda do singular, leia também como segunda plural. De todo modo, a letra original usa segunda pessoa do singular, que é o mesmo modus operandi do latim com textos religiosos

Hello Josemar, thank you very much for this translation, and also for all your “thanks” to my translations.
I don’t speak Portuguese but can understand it pretty well, as it is a romance language.
I noticed that many words are quite similar in both languages, so I guess it wasn’t too difficult for you to translate from Sardinian into Portuguese. In any case your translation is great.

With reference to your footnote, I can say that the pluralis maiestatis is seldom used in Sardinian, mostly in old religious songs, as a legacy of the Spanish voseo because many of them were composed during the Spanish rule (about 1300-1700). Anyway this is a modern song, and as you rightly noticed, some Sardinian expressions are rather close to Latin.

For example, “ti cantat s’anima” is quite similar to the Latin “tibi cantat anima”, so I wonder if it could be translated more literally also in Portuguese (a alma canta para ti), or may it sound weird?

Hello Marco, you're welcome!

Yes, some words are very similar in both languages, Latin and Italian also helped me to understand the Sardinian text.

The Catholic Church in Brazil loves to use pluralis maiestatis in religious texts, the Pater Noster and the Ave Maria were translated into Portuguese using pluralis maiestatis.

Well, actually, "a alma canta para ti" is a better translation for “ti cantat s’anima”, thank you so much! Regular smile
