1How did Ireland come to be called the Emerald Isle?
Ireland’s resplendent greenery played a big part, of course, in earning it the nickname the Emerald Isle but there’s more to the story.

1The term “The Emerald Isle” is synonymous with Ireland and its rolling hills and vales of green – at least forty shades
Style and influence The song uses the music from the Irish folk song "She Moved Through the Fair", but has completely different words.
Simple Minds Alan Stivell performing the Irish traditional folk song "She Moves Through The Fair" Live August 1995 in Paris, France.
Alan Stivell released the album "Brian Boru" the same year. The Simple Minds song "Belfast Child" used this melody and a similar arrangement.
Simple Minds also recorded a version of "She moves through the fair" for the Billy Sloan session of 2002.
Lyrics:
My young love said to me,
My mother won't mind,
And my father won't slight you,
For your lack of kind.
Then, she stepped away from me,
And this she did say:
"It will not be long love,
'Til our wedding day."
She stepped away from me,
And she moved through the fair,
And fondly I watched her,
Move here and move there.
Then she made her way homeward,
With one star awake,
As the swan in the evening,
Moves over the lake.
I dreamt it last night,
That my dead love came in,
So softly she moved,
That her feet made no din.
Then she came close beside me,
And this she did say:
"It will not be long love,
'Til our wedding day."
Jim Kerr recalled in 1000 UK Number 1 Hits why he used the melody, "I first heard the melody (of She Moved Through The Fair) a few days after the Enniskillen bombing (when a bomb planted by the IRA exploded during a Remembrance Day service at Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, killing 12 people and injuring at least 63), and like everybody when you see the images I was sick.
In the second part of the song, I'm trying to relate to people in Northern Ireland who lost loved ones. I'm trying to talk about the madness, the sadness, and the emptiness. I'm not saying I have any pearls of wisdom, but I have a few questions to ask".
