Tsar Nikita and his 40 daughters

There was once a Tsar, Nikita
He was rich, and fun, and cheerful.
Neither was he kind nor evil,
Flowers grew under his feet.
This Tsar laboured....just a little,
Drank and ate he, prayed to God...
And from different mothers then
Forty daughters came to life.
Forty stunning lovely maidens,
Forty angels sent from Heavens,
Tender-hearted, tender-souled,
See those feet, then? Oh, my God!
See the head? The hair's amazing!
Wondrous eyes and wondrous voices!
One's wit may turn witless yet.
Head to toes with just one word,
The Tsarinas wanted nothing.
One thing though was simply lacking...
What was lacking, you may ask?
Eh, mere trifles! Nothing, zilch!
Nothing or just very little,
Nonetheless was there still lacking...
How could one explain all that,
Without driving into rage
That esteemed and pious fool,
Called "tough censorship" by most?
What to do? Oh, help me God!
In between Tsarinas' legs...
No way, it is way too clear.
And a threat to modesty...
This... or that way...or whichever...
Venus' breasts is what I like,
Lips and legs, especially,
But the lover's fire-starter,
Is my cherished greatest wish.
What is that? - It is no thing!
Nothing or just very little...
That is what was really missing
In our young Tsarinas' lives
Playful, mischievous, alive.
Their births of certain wonder
Brought bewilderment to all
Faithful hearts of the Tsar's court.
Sadness overcame the father,
And for mothers full of grief,
And for midwives hard at work,
As the news became wide-spread,
Each one's mouth gaped non-stop.
They said Oh! and Ah! and wondered,
But some others, though still laughing,
Acted quietly, lest they,
Get exiled far away.
Tsar then ordered court to gather,
Mothers, nurses to obey,
A decree then issued he:
If there's one among you who,
Gives my girls a taste of sin,
Or could put them into thinking,
Or by mere force of hinting,
Tell them what it is they need,
But if foul things they hear,
Or some rudeness they are shown,
I am not the one to joke,
Women will have tongues cut off,
Men's fate will be worse, not lighter
Which at times gets quickly tighter.
Tsar was strict but fair man.
And his order, eloquent.
Poor women white with fear,
Lest their men divulge the secret.
While in secret did men think:
I wish I could blame my wife!
Seems their hearts were full of anger.
The Tsarinas then grew older.
Feeling pity, Tsar's advisers,
Were enlightened on the case,
In a quiet, voiceless style,
Out of reach of servants' ears...
So it got the courtiers thinking,
How to treat what ails the girls.
Then an old and wise adviser
Pondered on a bit, then Hark!
His bald forehead did he slap then
And then roared to the Tsar he:
Oh, my governor, the wisest!
Pardon me my dumb presumption,
If I tell you how the carnal
Deed was done in days of yore.
I once new some one match-maker.
Where is she, and what is she now?
She's exactly what she's been,
Famed to be a well-known witch.
Ailing members did she cure.
Oh, I wish she could be found.
Crone will sort this thing right out,
What's required shall be stuck in.
So let's send men after her!
There exclaimed our Tsar Nikita,
Having frowned his eye-brows.
You shall bring this witch at once!
And if we be tricked by this hag,
And what's needed's not obtained,
So our beans begin to sprout,
Or she's lying for some gain,
Then I'm Tsar who's good for nothing,
Lest I, on a Blessed Monday
Order so the witch be burnt,
May the Heavens be appeased!
And so, gingerly, in secret,
By some hidden courier's trail,
To all corners of the Earth,
Many gofers have been sent.
They go riding, seeking round,
For the witch their Tsar is after.
Year passes and so forth,
There's no single piece of news.
When one day, some feisty gofer,
Goes and finds a welcome trail.
Rides into some murky woods...
Seems the devil led him there.
He then looks and sees a house,
Witch's place that. Ancient woman.
He, being sent there by the Tsar,
Did not falter and walked in.
Fearlessly he took a bow,
Then apprised her of the orders,
Of Tsarinas in this world,
And what's missing in their lives.
Our witch had got his purport,
Out the door was pushed the gofer,
She then uttered him: Now go,
Quick and fast without turning,
Otherwise you'll catch a fever!
In three days, come see me here,
For a parcel and an answer,
Just take heed, you, when it's dawning!
Then she locked herself inside,
Having filled her firewood stores,
For three days and nights she crafted,
So the Satan came a-knocking.
Asking that his treasured chest
To the palace could be sent.
Full of sinful wicked things,
So adored and loved by all.
Every kind was there aplenty,
Every size and colour there,
Great selection. All with curls...
So, by witch were they selected
The best forty then subtracted,
In a piece of cloth got wrapped
Put inside the chest and locked.
Then the courier got the chest,
And some silver for the road.
On his way, the sun was dawning,
It was time to take a break then.
And to eat and have a drink,
Vodka's great for quenching thirst.
He was accurate and prudent,
Fully stocked up for the journey.
His stud's grazing, he is dreaming
How the Tsar advances him,
Makes him prince or count yet...
So, one wonders what is in it?
What's the witch sent to the Tsar?
Through the keyhole he sees nothing,
Firmly shut's the chest, such pity.....
Pressed his ears to hear something,
Naught but silence dwelt inside.
Then he sniffed, - familiar smell.
Blasted crone! What is this wonder?
That one ought to take a peak at!
So the lad then lost control.
But just as the chest got open,
Birdies flapped their wings and soared,
Having landed on tree branches,
Their tails set to wagging.
Our gofer tried to call them,
Lure them, offering bread crusts.
Crumbs afoot, to no avail,
Must be used to different feed.
Singing's joyful on tree branches,
While inside the chest, what for?
Now he sees way down the road,
All stooped down like an arch,
Some old woman with a cane.
Kissed her feet then hapless gofer.
Help me, please, spare not your mercy,
Can you see, my dire position?
I can't catch them, though I tried,
What could help my sorrow now?
So the old one looked above her,
Spat and hissed at him however:
Though you'd wrought a lousy matter,
But don't cry now, and don't fret,
All you need is show them "that"...
They'll fly down to you, for sure.
So, he thanked the old wise hag,
And no sooner had he shown it,
Than the birdies flapping towards him
Took possession of the chest.
He, without needless thinking,
Turned the key on all the forty,
And set off for home of his.
Well, Tsarinas got the birdies,
Put them promptly into cages.
Tsar then being overjoyed,
Ordered never-ending feast.
For three days and nights they partied,
For one month did naught but rest,
Tsar's advisers got rewarded,
Not forgetting 'bout the witch.
From kunstkamera, for present
Sent a candle-end in liquor,
That, which must have startled all.
Pair of skeletons, echidnas,
From the rumoured self-same storage.
And the gofer was rewarded.
This is how the story ends.
Many people will berate me.
Even now they surely question:
My work's silly, what's the point?
What do they care? So
I want!!

Hi Mity!
Thank you for this work, it's really interesting! I'd like to remain ladylike... Is it possible that Pushkin meant some body parts here:
:) Thx

Hello to you, ladylike reader))).
I am not an expert in old russian, but it's very likely Pushkin would not have used the word член meaning what people giggle about these days. Just an archaic use of the word "member" which in old english also means a body part.
Cheers.

Well, that's a relief :D

However, whether the word in question in the poet's time had any other "peculiar" definition, I cannot say. Could Pushkin have been so provocative? Hmmm...
