Gloria Jones version (1964; released 1965) information

American artist Gloria Jones recorded the original version of "Tainted Love" in 1964; the song was written and produced by Ed Cobb. It was the B-side of her 1965 single "My Bad Boy's Comin' Home", which was a commercial flop, failing to chart in either the US or the UK. According to Nick Talevski, before Jones recorded the song, Cobb had offered it to the Standells, whom he managed and produced, but they rejected it. The Standells say that the song was never offered to them, and that they were not signed to Cobb’s company Greengrass Productions until 1966, some two years after Jones’s recording.

In 1973, British club DJ Richard Searling purchased a copy of the almost decade-old single while on a trip to the United States. The track's Motown-influenced sound (featuring a fast tempo, horns, electric rhythm guitar and female backing vocals) fit in perfectly with the music favoured by those involved in the UK's Northern Soul club scene of the early 1970s, and Searling popularised the song at the Northern Soul club Va Va’s in Bolton, and later, at Wigan Casino.

Owing to the new-found underground popularity of the song, Jones re-recorded "Tainted Love" in 1976 and released it as a single, but it also failed to chart. This version was released on her album Vixen and was produced by her boyfriend Marc Bolan.

In 2014, NME ranked it number 305 in their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

"Tainted Love" is a song composed by Ed Cobb, formerly of American group the Four Preps, which was originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964. It attained worldwide fame after being covered by Soft Cell in 1981 and has since been covered by numerous groups and artists

I don't know if "La bamba" could fit here. It's a mexican folk song, when Ritchie Valens made a rock and roll version, it became famous outside Mexico... but if I search on youtube, the most popular version is by Los Lobos

Fun tragic fact: Willie Nelson performed the song with Johnny Cash on the 1998 release of VH1 Storytellers: Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson. The song was also featured on a December 2009 ASPCA commercial.

Willie Nelson recorded and released the song in early 1982. It raced to number one on Billboard magazine's Hot Country Singles chart that May, spending two weeks on top and a total of 21 weeks on the chart. The song also did very well on Top 40 radio, reaching number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and staying on that chart for 23 weeks. In the year-end charts, it was Billboard's biggest Country hit for 1982. This version also charted in a number of other countries.

Nelson's version would result in three wins at the 25th Grammy Awards in February 1983: songwriters Christopher, James, and Carson won Song of the Year and Best Country Song; in addition, Nelson won for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.This version also won Country Music Association awards in two consecutive years: 1982 Song of the Year and 1983 Song of the Year for songwriters Christopher, James and Carson; 1982 Single of the Year for Nelson, and; contributed to Nelson winning 1982 Album of the Year for the album "Always on My Mind".

The single was certified Platinum by the RIAA signifying U. S. (sales in excess of two million). In 2008, the single was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Nelson's version was also featured in its entirety in a season two (2013) episode of the HBO television series The Newsroom.

This gets a little complicated.... A cover that was once more popular than the original version only to be out done by an even more popular cover of that very same song! So each one of these covers became more popular than the original version.

Easily one of the, if not the, most famous songs to come from Bowling for Soup, "1985" didn't start out with the band. The song was written and first recorded by fellow American rock band SR-71 in 2003. It didn't make much of an impression.

There are a few versions of the story of how the song ended up with Bowling for Soup, but regardless, it was an amicable handover, and the song performed incredibly well when the cover was released in 2004.
