Tainted Love by Soft Cell in 1981 (bonus: The 12" single version (extended dance version) was a medley, transitioning to a cover of the Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go" halfway through the song.)

(another popular cover was covered in 2001 by Marilyn Manson)

Originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964

Gloria Jones version (1964; released 1965) information

American artist Gloria Jones recorded the original version of "Tainted Love" in 1964; the song was written and produced by Ed Cobb. It was the B-side of her 1965 single "My Bad Boy's Comin' Home", which was a commercial flop, failing to chart in either the US or the UK. According to Nick Talevski, before Jones recorded the song, Cobb had offered it to the Standells, whom he managed and produced, but they rejected it. The Standells say that the song was never offered to them, and that they were not signed to Cobb’s company Greengrass Productions until 1966, some two years after Jones’s recording.

In 1973, British club DJ Richard Searling purchased a copy of the almost decade-old single while on a trip to the United States. The track's Motown-influenced sound (featuring a fast tempo, horns, electric rhythm guitar and female backing vocals) fit in perfectly with the music favoured by those involved in the UK's Northern Soul club scene of the early 1970s, and Searling popularised the song at the Northern Soul club Va Va’s in Bolton, and later, at Wigan Casino.

Owing to the new-found underground popularity of the song, Jones re-recorded "Tainted Love" in 1976 and released it as a single, but it also failed to chart. This version was released on her album Vixen and was produced by her boyfriend Marc Bolan.

In 2014, NME ranked it number 305 in their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

"Tainted Love" is a song composed by Ed Cobb, formerly of American group the Four Preps, which was originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964. It attained worldwide fame after being covered by Soft Cell in 1981 and has since been covered by numerous groups and artists

wikipedia says:

Quote:

"Valerie" is a song written by English indie rock band The Zutons from their second studio album Tired of Hanging Around (2006). Released as the album's second single on 19 June 2006 in the United Kingdom, along with their previous single "Why Won't You Give Me Your Love?", it gave The Zutons their joint-biggest single to date as well as their second UK top 10 single, climbing from number 41 (through download sales alone the day before physical release) to its peak at number 9 in the UK Singles Chart. A 2007 cover version by Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse was more successful than the original, peaking at number 2 on the UK chart and number 1 in the Netherlands.

Willie Nelson: Always on my mind https://lyricstranslate.com/en/Willie-Nelson-Always-My-Mind-lyrics.html

Information source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Always_on_My_Mind

"Always on My Mind" is a rueful and nostalgic love song by Johnny Christopher, Mark James, and Wayne Carson first recorded by B.J. Thomas in 1970, and later Gwen McCrae (as "You Were Always on My Mind") and Brenda Lee in 1972. The song has been a crossover hit, charting in both the country and western and pop categories.

AllMusic lists over 300 recorded releases of the song in versions by dozens of performers.[1] While Brenda Lee's version had stalled at number 45 on the country charts in 1972, other performers reached the top 20 in the United States and elsewhere with their own versions: Elvis Presley in 1972; John Wesley Ryles in 1979; Willie Nelson's Grammy Award-winning version in 1982; and Pet Shop Boys in 1987.

Fun tragic fact: Willie Nelson performed the song with Johnny Cash on the 1998 release of VH1 Storytellers: Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson. The song was also featured on a December 2009 ASPCA commercial.

Willie Nelson recorded and released the song in early 1982. It raced to number one on Billboard magazine's Hot Country Singles chart that May, spending two weeks on top and a total of 21 weeks on the chart. The song also did very well on Top 40 radio, reaching number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and staying on that chart for 23 weeks. In the year-end charts, it was Billboard's biggest Country hit for 1982. This version also charted in a number of other countries.

Nelson's version would result in three wins at the 25th Grammy Awards in February 1983: songwriters Christopher, James, and Carson won Song of the Year and Best Country Song; in addition, Nelson won for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. This version also won Country Music Association awards in two consecutive years: 1982 Song of the Year and 1983 Song of the Year for songwriters Christopher, James and Carson; 1982 Single of the Year for Nelson, and; contributed to Nelson winning 1982 Album of the Year for the album "Always on My Mind".

The single was certified Platinum by the RIAA signifying U. S. (sales in excess of two million). In 2008, the single was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Nelson's version was also featured in its entirety in a season two (2013) episode of the HBO television series The Newsroom.

This gets a little complicated.... A cover that was once more popular than the original version only to be out done by an even more popular cover of that very same song! So each one of these covers became more popular than the original version.

https://lyricstranslate.com/en/chris-ledoux-life-highway-lyrics.html 1998

This version was made in 1998 and was very popular until the movie Cars came out

In 1998, Chris LeDoux covered “Life Is a Highway” for his album One Road Man. The song is one of Chris' most popular. Changes include the intro to the song, the timing of vocal entrances on the chorus, and location names between the first and second chorus.

https://lyricstranslate.com/en/tom-cochrane-life-highway-lyrics.html 1991

“Life Is a Highway” is a song written by Tom Cochrane, from his 1991 album Mad Mad World. The song was Cochrane's most famous song, becoming a number one hit in his native Canada. The song also peaked at number six on the Billboard charts in the United States in 1992. The song has been covered by Rascal Flatts for the Cars soundtrack, as well as by Chris LeDoux, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Home Free

Van Halen: You Really Got Me
originally by The Kinks

Metallica: Whiskey in a Jar
Originally by Thin Lizzy

Thin Lizzy’s version of “Whiskey in a Jar” is actually a cover itself. It’s just that the Dublin rock band has been so identified with the traditional Irish drinking song that most people don’t realize. Either way, Metallica took the hard-rocking version and took things to 11 with their cover on Garage, Inc.. It’s since become one of their biggest songs, but it still gets a particularly large reaction whenever the group plays in Ireland.

Baby I Need Your Lovin'" - Johnny Rivers

One of Johnny Rivers's defining songs, "Baby I Need Your Lovin'" was originally recorded by the Four Tops band in 1964. The song wasn't Four Tops' most successful on the charts, but it's easily one of their most influential, even though hardly anyone knows it's theirs.

But, credit where it's due — Rolling Stone placed the original song on their list of "500 Greatest Songs of All Time." Johnny's version generated far more chart success, and he still gets the credit today for the hit.

1985" - Bowling for Soup

Easily one of the, if not the, most famous songs to come from Bowling for Soup, "1985" didn't start out with the band. The song was written and first recorded by fellow American rock band SR-71 in 2003. It didn't make much of an impression.

There are a few versions of the story of how the song ended up with Bowling for Soup, but regardless, it was an amicable handover, and the song performed incredibly well when the cover was released in 2004.
