Ну если это смешно, тогда я -- бегемот (не булгаковский)
This is why I take my hat off
Vlad's translation is very straight forward, though leaving food for thought, like the original lyrics
St.,кто как не вы можете людям правду донести
Please, post your translation, I feel you already have one
Please
I mean...this is the only translation of this song I know of. I think people know well enough of my mental health and self-esteem to know I don't revere my translations as a ne plus ultra of all translations and am almost always open to suggestions. I also strive to make sure my translations allow for input and encourage it, and I am perfectly fine with other people's interpretations of a song as there can never be one true translation (unless the author of the song provides that translation, then that's the closest one can get to having a true translation of a song). So by all means, I'd love feedback or input or even to see your take on the song St. Sol. I have admiration for your translations and a lot of times it inspires me to continue translating, and I honestly would love to see your take on this song.
V, i think that the first and foremost importance is the desire to understand - you are always open to the feedback. I wish I could offer you insight here, but I’m not certain it would do you any good. But, I can offer an insight to Sol that would benefit us all - you can explain and share your depth or you can drown others in doubts of their intelligence, knowledge, and desire.
Not much of a choice, if you ask me.
You have every right to tackle difficult songs, and without your initiative these lyrics might have been left untranslated for years.
I hope you didn't take my remark for a criticism. If anything, it was just a statement about my own bashfulness.
Keep up the good work, Herr Beethoven ;)
Yeah, I can see that. I'm just used to "Велинка" meaning "Giant" or "Behemoth"
Yes, they're the lord of the dust -- I see a little sarcasm in this line, like "Aren't they the lord of the dust?" And your "my'" in this stanza is "their"
From paper, these creatures go away -- it's actually "from paper creatures they go away"
Vlad, since I don't look to Sol's possible translation at all I'll give you a few suggestions that you might want to consider
1/ Freeze, as you are made of stone ("ведь" is just an intensifier, so you may use the full form "you are" to stress it)
2/ Поссорятся два великана, Землю начнут трясти. The first sentence is an if-less conditional. You may use the same pattern in English Should two behemoths quarrel, the earth will tremble.
3/ the lords of the dust - plural
4/Look, they stay as if frozen (the subject is missing in the original sentence but it's implied)
5/ So that their bulging eyes can stay keen, they set themselves on fire from within
6/ They soon forget and wave their hands (no good-bye in view as far as I see)
7/ With their temples boiling hot, far from paper creatures they wander (I wandered lonely as a cloud -sweet school days ;)
8/ Don't stop them from binding their arms
9/ Pray for these two behemoths,(=I love the way you put it!) who have lost their minds on the way
10/ Don't move and everything will settle down as before
11/ After that the dust will go up, And the soul will rest. (Actually, the last sentence is a stretch but I absolutely love it! I'd leave it as is to show your personal interpretation)
It all may look gross but in fact, I've just corrected some minor nuances which you might need to understand Russian artistic texts. Vlad, those are not corrections but explanations rather. You're a native so you can pick out your own wording.
I'm wishing you all the best with mastering Russian :)
